Old Town Rock Hill is the historic downtown core of Rock Hill, South Carolina — a walkable urban district that anchors the city’s identity and has served as a center of commerce, government, and community life since Rock Hill’s founding in the 1850s. The neighborhood sits at the intersection of Main Street and Black Street, surrounded by Johnston Street, Dave Lyle Boulevard, and the surrounding blocks that form the city’s traditional downtown footprint.

## History and Development

Rock Hill was established as a railroad stop on the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad line around 1852, and the area that became Old Town developed organically around the depot and early commercial district. The city was incorporated in 1870 and grew rapidly into one of the Piedmont region’s most significant textile manufacturing centers through the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The downtown district reflects layers of that history: late Victorian commercial buildings along Main Street, mid-century brick storefronts, and newer infill development that has come with recent revitalization efforts. A number of buildings in Old Town date to the early 1900s, when Rock Hill’s cotton mill economy was at its peak.

## The Thread Trail and Connectivity

One of the most significant infrastructure investments in Old Town in recent years is The Thread, a multi-use trail system that connects the downtown core to neighborhoods and recreational areas across Rock Hill. The Thread passes through Old Town and links to Glencairn Garden, the Cherry Park area, and other green spaces. The trail network is designed for pedestrians and cyclists and has become a model for walkable connectivity in mid-sized South Carolina cities.

The city of Rock Hill has invested heavily in streetscape improvements in Old Town, including lighting, crosswalks, and sidewalk upgrades that improve pedestrian access throughout the district. Dave Lyle Boulevard serves as a major east-west corridor connecting Old Town to Interstate 77 and the broader Rock Hill metropolitan area.

## University Center and Recent Investment

The University Center — a joint academic facility shared by Winthrop University, York Technical College, and other institutions — anchors the southern edge of Old Town and brings thousands of students and faculty into the downtown district. The facility opened as part of a broader strategy to anchor the downtown with institutional partners and attract residential and retail development to adjacent blocks.

Rock Hill’s Come-See-Me Festival, one of South Carolina’s oldest and largest annual celebrations, is centered in and around Old Town each spring. The festival draws tens of thousands of visitors and showcases the district’s parks, green spaces, and public amenities. Glencairn Garden, a formal botanical garden adjacent to Old Town, is the principal outdoor attraction and hosts the festival’s main events.

## Dining, Retail, and Arts

Old Town Rock Hill has developed a growing cluster of locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and arts venues over the past decade. The Rock Hill Arts Council and local galleries have made the district a hub for visual and performing arts in York County. Evening events, outdoor concerts, and farmers markets on the weekend bring residents from across the city and surrounding communities into the downtown core.

The area around White Street and Johnston Street is particularly active, with several restaurants and bars that draw a mix of Winthrop students, young professionals, and longtime residents. City of Rock Hill data shows significant growth in commercial occupancy in Old Town over the past five years, reflecting the success of targeted investment in streetscape, parking, and event programming.

## Living in Old Town

Old Town Rock Hill includes a mix of historic single-family homes, renovated townhomes, and newer apartment developments aimed at walkable urban living. Proximity to Winthrop University, The Thread, and the downtown employment and entertainment district makes Old Town attractive to younger residents and empty-nesters looking for a walkable lifestyle without commuting to Charlotte.

The neighborhood is served by Rock Hill Schools, with Ebinport Elementary, Sullivan Middle School, and Rock Hill High School among the schools serving families in the broader Old Town area. York Technical College’s main campus is also accessible by trail and by car from the downtown district.

City of Rock Hill planning documents identify Old Town as a priority investment corridor, with ongoing work on streetscape, stormwater management, and mixed-use zoning to support continued growth. More information about Old Town Rock Hill is available through the city at cityofrockhill.com and through the Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation.
