# Illinois HS cancels varsity football season

A high school in Illinois has announced the cancellation of the remainder of its varsity football season following its game this week. Sherrard High School officials stated the decision was made due to an insufficient number of varsity-ready players.

The limited roster size would require the same athletes to participate in offense, defense, and special teams every week, significantly increasing their risk of injuries and potential burnout. Sherrard High School Principal Alex Johnson acknowledged the difficulty of this decision, recognizing the hard work invested by both players and coaches.

Head coach Zach Weigel expressed that the decision is particularly heartbreaking for the team’s five senior players, but emphasized its necessity for the long-term future of the football program. The district intends to honor these senior players and their families with special traditions during the team’s final game this Friday against Orion.

Moving forward, Sherrard High School plans to concentrate on its junior varsity schedule, with a focus on player development. The school anticipates a return to varsity competition in the next academic year.
