Jeff and Angel Taylor, a Charlotte couple, have expanded their company, Soulful Sounds, from primarily DJ services to a full audio-visual services firm. This strategic shift, led by Angel Taylor, focuses on corporate growth and operations, repositioning the business around its comprehensive audio-visual expertise. The company, which offers DJs, MCs, photo booths, and party favors, was founded by Jeff Taylor in the late 1980s in New York.

Jeff Taylor began DJing at age 15, securing his first paid gig for $30 at a friend’s birthday party in Queens, New York. He performed his first wedding at 19, shortly after high school. The realization that he could entertain strangers and make it a business came after DJing a coworker’s wedding and seeing the audience’s reactions. Soulful Sounds initially grew to 50 to 60 events annually while Jeff maintained a full-time job, experiencing significant growth around the turn of the millennium.

Angel Taylor joined Jeff’s life later, and her involvement in the business evolved over time. She became instrumental in the company’s operations, managing social media, designing brochures, reviewing contracts, and building the company website. Through a women entrepreneurs group, she learned about government contracting, grants, and small-business certifications, eventually becoming Chief Operations Officer. She recognized that the company was primarily booking modestly paid DJ events, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The couple relocated to Charlotte in July 2015, following their oldest daughter who moved to attend UNC Charlotte’s nurse anesthetist program in May 2015. Their initial visit to Charlotte in 2008, when their son was young, sparked their affection for the city. Despite the 2008 economic crash, which led to Jeff losing his job and financial difficulties for the family, the desire to move to Charlotte persisted. Jeff described the move as the worst financial decision but the happiest period for them, noting that Charlotte offered them more time compared to the constant hustle of New York.

Jeff transitioned to full-time work for Soulful Sounds about five years ago, after various part-time jobs ended. Angel had encouraged him to focus on the business. Since the pandemic, his bookings have increased. Angel developed a framework called SOUL to guide their repositioning: Sound (clean audio), Outcome (event goals met), Uplift (guest energy), and Lasting impression (memorability). This framework helped pivot the company to be seen as an audio-video company that also DJs, aiming for Fortune 500 clients on the corporate side and memorable events for social clients.

Working together as a married couple has presented challenges, particularly in separating personal and business roles. Angel noted it was difficult early on, and Jeff found it challenging to adjust to new input after running the business for years. However, Angel is credited with securing one of their largest contracts to date through corporate relationships. The Soulful Sounds team consists of full-time professionals, relying solely on relationships and word-of-mouth for bookings, with no advertising expenses. Jeff envisions a future where they can step back from daily operations, showing up mainly to thank clients, while still ensuring the quality of each event.
