GREENVILLE, S.C. — Winthrop’s men’s golf team will start Tuesday’s final round of the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville in 10th place in a 15-team field, and the Eagles’ women begin a three-round event in Greensboro, N.C., on Monday.

The men played 36 holes Sunday at the Furman University Golf Club, a par-71 course, and posted team scores of 301 and 291 for a 592 total, 24 over par. Cold, gusty weather marked the first round, after which Winthrop sat in a tie for ninth. The team trimmed 10 shots off its score the second time around.

Junior Cole Rouse is the top Eagle, tied for 24th. He struggled to a 77 in the morning, six over par, then answered with a 70 that put him one under for the round. Thomas Lamar, a junior, and Andrew Gregory, a senior, share 30th place. Sophomore Bowen Kicklighter, playing as an individual entry, recovered from an 86 to shoot 69, two under par and the lowest Winthrop score of round two.

Winthrop is the best team in the field on the par 3s at a combined seven over. The last 18 holes tee off at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday from the first and 10th tees.

The women’s team plays 36 holes Monday and 18 more Tuesday at the UNCG Collegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club. Winthrop’s group for the first two rounds includes Marshall and Catawba.

Senior Constanca Mendonca carries a 74.29 stroke average, best on the team, and tied for 16th last week when Winthrop placed 11th at the Terrier Intercollegiate. Freshman Avery Suter is next at 76.71. A year ago the Eagles tied for seventh at the Greensboro tournament.
