FORT MILL, S.C. — Residents in a stretch of unincorporated Fort Mill near Tega Cay are under a boil water advisory after a routine check of the county water supply found high levels of coliform bacteria, including E. coli.

York County Utilities put the advisory in place Thursday afternoon. It covers the Hawks Creek and Waterstone neighborhoods and homes along Stockbridge and Coralstone drives, more than 1,300 houses, townhomes and apartments in all, plus the Stockbridge Commons shopping center.

Customers should bring water to a rolling boil for at least a full minute before drinking it or cooking with it. Cooled boiled water or bottled water should also be used for brushing teeth, rinsing produce, mixing baby formula, making ice and filling pet bowls.

The problem showed up in a regular test, not a main break or spill, according to the county, and the state Department of Environmental Services told the county the advisory was needed.

Water customers of the town of Fort Mill are not affected, the town said.
