Spartanburg County operates seven fully independent K-12 school districts — more than any comparably sized county in South Carolina. **Spartanburg School District 1** covers Campobello, Gramling, Inman, Landrum, and Chesnee, anchored by Chapman and Landrum high schools. **District 2** serves the high-growth Boiling Springs corridor. **District 3** spans Glendale, Pacolet, and Cowpens. **District 4** serves the Woodruff area. **District 5** feeds Duncan, Lyman, Reidville, and Wellford into **James F. Byrnes High School**, one of Upstate South Carolina's largest campuses. **District 6** covers Roebuck and the Anderson Mill Road corridor, feeding into **Dorman High School**. **District 7** encompasses the city of Spartanburg, centering on **Spartanburg High School**. Seven elected boards, seven separate budgets, seven sets of policy decisions — all within one county.

Beyond the public-school system, Spartanburg County hosts a higher-education ecosystem that rivals metro areas many times its size. **Wofford College** — 1,800 students — competes at the Division I FCS level in the **Southern Conference**, with **Gibbs Stadium** filling every fall. **Converse University**, formerly Converse College, went fully co-ed in 2021 after 130 years as a women's institution. **USC Upstate** enrolls roughly 6,000 students in the **Big South Conference**, with a College of Education that supplies teachers directly to Spartanburg County classrooms. **Spartanburg Community College** operates multiple campuses — including the Tyger River site in Duncan — with certificates, associate degrees, and dual-enrollment pathways. **Spartanburg Methodist College** offers two-year and bachelor-level programs. **Sherman College of Chiropractic** draws graduate students nationwide for its accredited Doctor of Chiropractic degree.

South Carolina's public-school governance flows through the **SC Department of Education** under State Superintendent **Ellen Weaver**, which administers **SC READY** assessments each spring and enforces the **Read to Succeed Act** — requiring third-grade reading proficiency before promotion. Each of Spartanburg's seven districts has an independently elected school board setting local millage within the **SC General Assembly's K-12 funding formula**, which weights per-pupil dollars for poverty, disability, and English-learner status. The **SC High School League (SCHSL)** governs interscholastic athletics in 1A–5A tiers, placing Dorman and Byrnes at the top while Landrum and Chesnee compete at 1A–2A. Teacher pay begins at the state minimum and is locally supplemented — making salaries a perennial flashpoint at budget hearings across all seven boards.

HERESpartanburg tracks every open school-board meeting across all seven districts — agendas, votes, and budget summaries published before local papers. Our reporters cover graduation rates and **SC READY** scores by district; teacher-contract negotiations; the deployment of school resource officers on every Spartanburg County campus; SAT and ACT data; Title I funding allocations; building bond referenda; and the Friday Night Football calendar that runs August through November. The private and charter sector gets equal coverage: **Spartanburg Day School**, **Meeting Street Academy**, and **Spartanburg Charter School** each serve families choosing alternatives to the district system. From dual-enrollment windows at **Spartanburg Community College** to faculty announcements at **Wofford College** — if it happens in a Spartanburg classroom, on a Spartanburg campus, or at a district school-board dais, it is HERE.

### Why does Spartanburg County have 7 separate school districts?

Spartanburg County is unique in South Carolina — it's the only county with 7 fully independent school districts. This structure dates to the early 20th century when individual communities established their own school systems. Each district has its own elected school board, superintendent, and budget. This means property taxes and school policies can differ significantly from one community to the next, even in neighboring areas.

Enrollment is handled by each district independently. You must live within the district's attendance zone to enroll at no cost. Contact the specific district office for the neighborhood you live in — see the District Board Meetings section above for contact info. Most districts hold open enrollment periods in spring for the following school year.

In most cases, your assigned district is determined by your home address. However, some districts have inter-district transfer policies and open enrollment options. Contact individual districts to ask about transfer requests. The SC Governor's School for Science & Math (SCGSSM) is a statewide residential magnet open to all SC students through a competitive application.
