In his lone start of the week in the first game of the four-game home series with Toledo on Friday (a 3-0 Eagles victory), Huge was sensational against the Rockets. He played 7.0 innings, giving up just one hit, no runs and no walks and striking out a career-high 13 batters in getting his first win on the season.
It was also Winthrop’s first win of the season as a team. Huge mowed down the first 12 batters he faced before giving up his first hit with one out in the fifth inning. He then retired the next two batters after that. Huge continued his impressive outing, setting down Toledo in order in the sixth and after running into a little bit of trouble in the seventh, a fly out to centerfield ended the threat and his day on the mound.
This is Huge’s first weekly award of the season and his career and the first time Winthrop has been honored in 2024.
“He struck out 13 while allowing just one hit and no runs over 7.0 innings to pick up a win for the Eagles,” stated the Big South Conference.
“Congratulations to Riley Huge on being named this week’s Starting Pitcher of the Week,” tweeted Winthrop Baseball. “Huge threw 7 scoreless innings, striking out 13, picking up the win Friday vs Toledo.”
On February 26, Winthrop announced they would be facing rival Queens in the Battle Of I-77 Showdown. The Eagles fell to Toledo on February 25 in a Sunday afternoon game, splitting the four-game series. A day earlier, they split a doubleheader with Toledo. Riley Huge’s pitching gem on February 23 gave the Eagles their first win of the season.
