Rock Hill, S.C. – After splitting a two-game series at home with Appalachian State, the Winthrop baseball team is gearing up for an inter-region rivalry matchup with the Charlotte 49ers. The Eagles will travel just 45 minutes up the road to Charlotte, N.C. for the exciting game.
The upcoming game will mark the 45th meeting between Winthrop and Charlotte. The 49ers currently lead the series 24-19-1. Last season, the two teams met twice, with each team securing a victory. This season’s second matchup is scheduled for Apr. 23 in Rock Hill.
Winthrop boasts a strong pitching staff, ranking 2nd in the Big South with an ERA of 5.59. Pitchers like Owen Sarna, Reese Lumpkin, and Riley Huge have been standouts in the conference. Huge, in particular, leads the Big South in innings pitched and batters struck out.
Riley Huge, a key player for Winthrop, has received multiple Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week awards for his outstanding performances on the mound. His dominance has not gone unnoticed, as he has also won national accolades for his pitching prowess.
