Winthrop University’s baseball team faced a tough loss at home against South Carolina, with a final score of 15-3. The Eagles dropped both games of the home-and-home series to the Gamecocks this season, moving their overall record to 16-26-1. This game marked the final non-conference match for Winthrop this year.
In the game, Jaylen Hernandez went 1-2 with a run and an RBI, while Charlie Evans went 1-4 with a run, RBI, and a home run. The winning pitcher was Tyler Dean, while Connor Harris took the loss.
South Carolina took an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs. Winthrop managed to get on the board in the bottom of the first with Hernandez driving in a run. However, South Carolina continued to extend their lead throughout the game, ultimately winning 15-3 in seven innings.
Following this loss, Winthrop will now prepare to face High Point in a three-game Big South series. The first game will be held on May 10th at 6:00 p.m. Winthrop will look to bounce back and put up a strong performance against the conference-leading Panthers.
Notable performances in the game included Brinling and Jones from South Carolina, who contributed significantly to their team’s victory. Winthrop’s Evans showcased his power with a home run, but it wasn’t enough to overcome South Carolina’s dominant performance.
