Standout performances for Winthrop included Jaylen Hernandez, who went 2-4 with a run, RBI, and a double. On the mound, Brett Johnson picked up the win for UNC Asheville, while Riley Huge suffered the loss for Winthrop.
The Eagles had a chance to score first in the top of the second inning but came up short. UNC Asheville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning, setting the tone for the game. Winthrop tied the score in the third, but UNC Asheville responded with a four-run rally to pull ahead 5-1.
Winthrop fought back, cutting the lead in half in the fourth inning, but UNC Asheville continued to add to their lead with timely hitting. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 10-4 by the end of the game, securing the victory.
The Eagles will look to bounce back in the second game of the series against UNC Asheville tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
