Lancaster City Takes Steps to Support Local Farmers and Businesses

In Lancaster City, Pennsylvania, farmers and businesses are stepping into a new era of growth and support. The state is reaching out to its agricultural community to help gather essential information about transitioning farms. Farmers are encouraged to participate in an important survey that seeks to understand the challenges they face and the resources they may need when transferring farm ownership.

A Survey to Assist Farmers in Transition

The goal of this survey, which kicked off on January 22, is to assist the state’s Ag Business Development Center in identifying potential challenges and opportunities for farmers as they think about transitioning their operations. It has been a long time since a similar survey was conducted—back in 2005. The groundwork for this project was laid by Stephanie Shirk, the executive director at the center, in partnership with Penn State Extension and Pennsylvania Farm Link.

As of mid-February, the survey has drawn more than 300 responses from local farmers. Although this is a solid start, Shirk believes that many more farmers from the community need to weigh in. The survey is set to wrap up around mid-May, and Shirk is hopeful for an even greater turnout to ensure that every voice is heard.

Content of the Survey

The questions in this survey cover various aspects of farm operations. Participants will share information about the number of family and non-family members working on their farms, how much of their income is derived from off-farm sources, and their plans regarding retirement or ownership transfer. The survey also identifies newer farmers by asking if participants have less than ten years of farming experience. Pennsylvania holds a leading position in the country regarding the percentage of new farmers, making this data vital for state programs moving forward.

For those wanting to take part digitally, the survey is accessible at lanc.farm/progression, and it is also being promoted at pesticide credit workshops. Additionally, anyone wishing to provide their information over the phone can call 717-270-4391 for assistance.

New Ownership at Calandra Industrial Supply Company

In a related business shift, the Calandra Industrial Supply Company in Lancaster has announced new leadership as of September 2023. This company has served the industrial sector for over 50 years, initially starting as a local hardware store back in 1903. The company has changed hands several times since then, gaining a strong foothold in the industrial supply market.

The new owner, Mike Hubbard, comes with significant experience from the oil and gas industry, bringing a fresh perspective to the company with plans to continue its legacy of strong community ties and quality service. Alongside Hubbard, Matt Hubbard will serve as president, contributing his valuable experience in creative marketing and leadership within various industries.

With a firm focus on maintaining customer satisfaction and expanding their service offerings, this family-run business aims to foster deeper relationships within the community and the industries they serve.

Employee Ownership Transition at Weaver Superior Walls

In another exciting development in Lancaster County, two companies, Weaver Superior Walls and Northeast Superior Walls, have transitioned to a 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This initiative aims to empower employees by making them owners of the business, aligning everyone’s interests toward the long-term success of the companies.

Under the guidance of CEO Douglas Pfautz, this shift reflects a strategic move by the previous owners to cultivate a culture of shared ownership and improve the work environment. These companies specialize in the sale and installation of precast concrete foundation systems, with sales reaching several states including New York, Connecticut, and Maine.

ASSETS Helps Transition Lancaster Works

ASSETS, another key player in Lancaster, is making headlines as well. With the support of the Small Business Administration Mentor-Protege program, they have spun off Lancaster Works, a minority-owned social enterprise employment agency. This new transition allows Lancaster Works to pursue its mission independently, focusing on removing employment barriers and fostering an inclusive economy.

Under the leadership of Tyrone G. Miller, Lancaster Works seeks to pave the way for underserved individuals to access valuable employment resources. This agency has received numerous accolades over its brief history, including recognition as 2021 Employer of the Year.

A Bright Future for Lancaster Community

As Lancaster City embraces these transitions in agriculture and business, the community watches with eager anticipation. The collaboration between local farmers, emerging business leaders, and innovative social enterprises offers a pathway toward sustainable growth and a brighter economic future for all. From empowering farmers to fostering inclusive workplace environments, Lancaster is truly showcasing its dedication to supporting its residents and industries.
