Rock Hill, South Carolina – Suspect Charged with Murder of Pregnant Woman

Pedro Mondragon-Ramirez, a 41-year-old man, has been charged with the murder of Leonor Alpizar, a 37-year-old pregnant woman, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The charges also include the death of her unborn child and multiple weapon offenses. The incident took place late on the night of May 16, when Alpizar was stabbed multiple times at a mobile home park on Iris Circle.

Police discovered Alpizar suffering from serious stab wounds shortly after 10:30 PM. She was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center, where she was subsequently pronounced dead. Following the attack, Mondragon-Ramirez fled the scene in Alpizar’s vehicle, prompting law enforcement to initiate a manhunt.

The next day, on May 17, authorities located Mondragon-Ramirez during a traffic stop in Charlotte, North Carolina. In an attempt to evade capture, he led police on a high-speed chase exceeding 60 mph. Mecklenburg County court records confirmed that he was arrested as a fugitive from South Carolina.

Currently, Mondragon-Ramirez is being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail, where officials have placed a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer on him. He has waived extradition and has been transported back to South Carolina, where he is now detained at the York County Detention Center.

York County’s leading prosecutor, Kevin Brackett, has stated that his office will supervise the case before any federal immigration considerations are addressed. The individual faces serious legal consequences, as the charges of murder and the death of an unborn child can lead to prison sentences ranging from 30 years to life, in accordance with South Carolina state law.

Mondragon-Ramirez is scheduled to appear in court for the first time in South Carolina on Wednesday. During this initial appearance, he is expected to have the opportunity to request a public defender for legal representation.

While details surrounding Mondragon-Ramirez’s background remain unclear, authorities have not disclosed his country of origin or his duration of residency in the United States. This case particularly stands out against the backdrop of recent national trends, where there has been a notable rise in ICE arrests and deportations, emphasizing heightened scrutiny surrounding immigration status.

The tragic murder of Alpizar, alongside the implications it carries regarding her unborn child, has cast a shadow over the Rock Hill community. Local residents are grappling with the emotional aftermath of this violent crime, as the investigation continues. Law enforcement officials and the community remain alert as they await further developments in Mondragon-Ramirez’s case and its implications for local and federal law enforcement efforts regarding immigration issues.
