Rock Hill: Monay James And Jaylen Hernandez Named Comporium Student-Athletes Of The Month
Rock Hill, S.C. – Monay James and Jaylen Hernandez have been named the Comporium Student-Athletes of the Month.
James’s win in the women’s heptathlon highlighted day two for Winthrop on the second day of the 2024 Big South Outdoor Track And Field Championships on Tue., May 7 at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University in North Carolina. James became Winthrop’s first ever women’s heptathlon champion with a school record of 4966, garnering her an all-conference honor. The point total eclipses the old record Taryn Deleon 4877 set in 2017.
Hernandez was named the Big South Freshman of the Week for games played Apr. 29-May 5, the league office announced on May 6. During that week, Hernandez batted .357 (5-14) with a home run, three doubles, five RBI, and one run scored. He had at least one hit in all three games for Winthrop, including his second three-hit career performance in the series opener against Radford.
Hernandez opened the week with one hit and one RBI on Tuesday against Wofford. Following two days of postponements over the weekend due to rain, he started the series with the Highlanders going 3-4 with two doubles, a homer, and a career-high four RBI on Sunday in an 8-6 victory for the Eagles.
In Winthrop’s doubleheader sweep of Charleston Southern Thursday afternoon by final scores of 3-2 and 4-3, Hernandez won both games for the Eagles. In the first game, he went 1-3, scored twice, had an RBI and a home run. His home run in the bottom of the sixth gave Winthrop the lead for good. In the second game, Winthrop loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth after a walk and Hernandez was hit by a pitch to give the Eagles the walk-off victory and the doubleheader sweep.
In the month of May, played and started in all 10 games, going 9-35 with a batting average of .257, scoring five times, nine RBI’s, three doubles, two home runs, and five walks.
