Elon University Phoenix Fall to Winthrop Eagles in Rock Hill Classic Finale

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In the final game of the Rock Hill Classic held at Rock Hill, South Carolina, Elon University’s men’s basketball team, known as the Phoenix, ended their tournament on a losing note against the Winthrop Eagles.

Game Overview

The thrilling game concluded with the Eagles soaring above the Phoenix, culminating the game with a 78-70 victory. Despite the defeat, the Phoenix put forth a commendable performance throughout the tournament, securing significant victories over IUPUI and Holy Cross. They concluded the Rock Hill Classic with a 2-1 record.

Impressive Performance

Standout performances from Phoenix’s team included Rob Higgins, who dropped a career-high 20 points on a six-for-nine shooting from the field, along with TK Simpkins who significantly contributed with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists against the Eagles.

Basketball Drama

Right from the get-go, Nick Dorn put Phoenix in the lead with two quick three balls. Despite the Phoenix securing an early 11-point lead, the Eagles were successful in making a comeback with some fast break buckets. Rocked back on their heels, the Phoenix nevertheless rallied, reasserting their dominance to balance out the scoreline and reestablish their lead in the second half of the game.

Eagles Take Control

Unfortunately, their effort to regain control was met with resilience from the Eagles who scored five straight points, taking the lead once again. Simpkins continued to lead the Phoenix forward, unfortunately not enough to keep pace with the consistent scoring of Winthrop in the paint.

Statistical Overview

In the post-game analysis, the Phoenix were seen trailing in the all-time series with the Eagles 3-12, following Sunday’s loss. However, Elon managed to outrebound Winthrop 35-32, highlighted by Simpkins, Higgins, and Mackinnon who each garnered more than six rebounds.

Historical Marks and Upcoming Games

With two triples against the Eagles, Zac Ervin climbed to the 13th spot in the all-time Elon history in three-pointers made. Dorn also marked the second time at the Rock Hill Classic where he hit three or more threes.

Following these three challenging games at the Rock Hill Classic, the Phoenix now have five players all averaging over nine points per game. They will be looking to carry this momentum into their next match following the Thanksgiving break against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, scheduled for November 27 at 7:00 PM.
