Rock Hill Reports Two Fatal Shootings Linked to Random Violence
Rock Hill, South Carolina, has witnessed two fatal shootings that officials report may be connected to random violence. The incidents, which took place within a span of days, have led to several arrests, raising concerns about public safety in the community.
On June 27, 17-year-old ZyDerec Massey was shot and killed while completing a DoorDash delivery. The tragic event occurred as he drove down Finley Road near downtown Rock Hill. Massey was seriously injured when a bullet entered his vehicle, and despite immediate medical attention, he died shortly afterward.
Zykemian Havar Williams, a 21-year-old, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to Massey’s death. Williams was taken into custody on July 10 and is currently being held without bond. Authorities have indicated that three adults attempted to conceal evidence pertaining to the shooting and have since been charged as accessories. Rock Hill police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, specifically what Williams was targeting when he fired his weapon.
In a separate incident, 19-year-old Jy Querious Catoe was fatally shot while sitting in a car outside Adams Grocery on July 7. The young man was hit by bullets fired as two suspects, identified as A’montae Kevion Markise White, 19, and a 16-year-old juvenile, followed another man out of the grocery store and started shooting. The ambush occurred just before 10 p.m. and was recorded on surveillance cameras. Police described the attack as deliberate and targeted.
Catoe suffered at least two gunshot wounds to the head and succumbed to his injuries two days later. On July 10, White turned himself in to authorities, while both he and the unnamed 16-year-old have been charged with murder, attempted murder, and firearm possession during a violent crime. The adolescent suspect is currently in custody with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. As of now, there is no indication whether prosecutors will seek to try the 16-year-old as an adult.
The investigations surrounding both shootings have been classified as homicides as they both resulted in fatalities. Rock Hill police continue to seek the motives behind these violent acts.
Community Response
The recent violence has elicited strong reactions from the community, particularly from local leaders. Pastor C.T. Kirk has addressed the tragic loss of innocent lives due to such shootings and advocated for immediate interventions to mitigate gun violence. Efforts to enhance safety and address the underlying issues contributing to crime in the area are becoming increasingly urgent as these incidents have shaken the local populace.
As Rock Hill grapples with the aftermath of these shootings, residents are left reflecting on the safety of their neighborhoods. Investigations remain open and ongoing as law enforcement authorities work diligently to compile all necessary evidence and ensure accountability for the individuals involved.
The disturbing pattern of violence, characterized by randomness and disregard for human life, has become a topic of concern within the community as citizens and leaders alike call for a plan to curb the escalating gun-related crimes. Strengthening community relations and enhancing public safety initiatives are pivotal as Rock Hill navigates through this troubling chapter.
