Longwood Gears Up For Their First Conference Weekend Against Winthrop

In the upcoming weekend, Longwood University Athletics prepares for a landmark showdown as they hit the road for their first conference series. The Lancers, led by a stellar roster of seasoned and new players, travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to face off against Winthrop.

Lancers in Full Swing

The Longwood Lancers approach the series with a mixed bag of performances, having split their mid-week matches. They claimed victory over the VCU Rams on Tuesday, but suffered a setback when they dropped Wednesday’s game against William & Mary.

Despite the recent loss, performance from veterans such as Noah Campanelli, Hayden Harris, and Willie Havens on the plate, and Guillermo Garcia Jr. and Brenton Fisher pitching the weekend series games, the Lancers show great promise for the approaching tournament.

Off the diamond, Longwood University‘s athletic prowess has been impressive, with an honorable third place countrywide for most hit-by-pitches (HBP), and fifth most for the number of sacrifice bunts.

Weekend Matchup Preview

Noteworthy players to keep an eye on during the series include freshman infielders Logan Janney and Juice Tobin, both of whom have recently recorded their first career stolen bases and multi-hit performances. On the other hand, the Lancers’ Kevin Warunek displayed a promising night out of the bullpen, retiring all six batters he faced.

Stepping it up on offense, Noah Campanelli emerged as a significant player for the Lancers, churning out 3-4 with three of the four RBIs on Tuesday’s match night against the VCU. Looking forward, the Lancers hope to carry this momentum into their matches against Winthrop Eagles.

Looking Forward

The upcoming weekend series forms an essential part of the opening conference games for the Lancers. Despite dropping a series last season to the Eagles, Longwood steps into this showdown with high spirits and a run of strong earlier games. Halfway through their debut conference games, the Lancers will take a break for a midweek game against George Mason, followed by their homecoming for the first home conference series this season against Presbyterian at Buddy Bolding Stadium.

The game dates are set for Friday, March 15 at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 16 at 3 p.m., and Sunday, March 17 at 1 p.m. The matches are to take place at Winthrop Ballpark, home of the Winthrop Eagles, and are bound to draw large crowds from both universities.

For many waiting and watching, the Longwood Lancers have certainly unleashed a wave of enormous anticipation for the games ahead as they embark on their first conference series of the season.
