Lancaster, SC – A 52-year-old man, Roger Baskins, has been charged with murder following a deadly shooting incident that stemmed from a domestic dispute. Baskins, who is from Lancaster and Charlotte, faces multiple charges including armed robbery and burglary, in connection with the fatal shooting of 65-year-old Charles Wilburn Presler.

The violent altercation began on Wednesday at around 5:56 p.m. on Memorial Park Road, where Baskins had been staying with family members. The situation escalated quickly as Baskins allegedly threatened family members with a firearm and fired several shots into a family member’s vehicle. He also caused damage by smashing the windows of two other cars using a car battery.

After the initial disturbance, Baskins fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by family members on Willow Lake Road after a brief pursuit. At the time of his arrest, he was found driving a burgundy 1997 Toyota 4-Runner, which belonged to Presler.

Shortly after Baskins fled, police conducted a welfare check at Presler’s business based on a request from his wife, who had been unable to make contact with him. When officers arrived at the location, they discovered Presler dead from a gunshot wound, leading investigators to believe that there was a connection between his death and the earlier domestic incident involving Baskins. Evidence suggests that Baskins arrived at Presler’s business approximately one hour after the domestic disturbance.

During the investigation, law enforcement officials found Baskins in possession of documents belonging to Presler, and they recovered a firearm from the stolen vehicle. This led investigators to suspect that Presler had been robbed prior to his death as they pieced together the sequence of events that occurred on that fateful day.

Baskins now faces serious charges including murder, armed robbery, burglary, and multiple weapons offenses in relation to Presler’s death. In addition, he is charged with pointing and presenting a firearm and malicious destruction of property stemming from the earlier domestic incident. Following his arrest, a magistrate denied bail for Baskins on the Thursday after the incident.

Presler was described by the victim’s loved ones as a devoted father, husband, and grandfather who, along with his wife, supported children with autism, highlighting his commitment to family and community.

This tragic series of events has raised concerns about domestic violence and the potential consequences of escalating familial conflicts. The legal proceedings against Baskins will continue as authorities seek justice for Presler and his grieving family.
