Charlotte, NC – Polly Buice Anglin, an esteemed educator and storytelling enthusiast, passed away on June 18, 2025, at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. Known for her vibrant personality and dedication to her students, Polly’s contributions to education spanned over three decades, shaping the lives of countless children and families in the Charlotte community.

Born on December 7, 1940, in Rock Hill, SC, Polly was the daughter of John Irving Buice and Elizabeth Spigener Buice. She grew up in Hickory Grove, SC, where she excelled academically and athletically, playing Varsity Women’s Basketball throughout her high school years. Polly graduated as Valedictorian of her class in 1958 before continuing her education at Winthrop College, where she majored in Elementary and Christian Education, culminating in her graduation in 1962.

Shortly after college, Polly embarked on her teaching career in Beaufort, SC, where she shared an apartment with fellow educators, including her best friend Libby Cone. Despite an initial rocky start, the two became inseparable companions after three years of teaching together in Atlanta, GA, embarking on many memorable adventures, including a cross-country trip and witnessing the Apollo 10 launch in Daytona, FL.

In 1967, Polly relocated to Charlotte, NC, to begin teaching 2nd grade at Barringer Elementary. It was during this time, in the fall of 1969, that she met Troy Anglin, whom she would marry on June 20, 1970. The couple enjoyed nearly 50 years of marriage, raising two children and actively participating in their churches. Polly’s dedication to her family continued even after Troy’s passing in March 2020, as she remained devoted to him while facing her own battle with dementia.

Throughout her illustrious teaching career in Charlotte, Polly primarily taught kindergarten and 1st grade, along with short stints teaching preschool at Incarnation Lutheran and St Andrews Methodist churches during a period when she was raising her children. She concluded her career at Lake Wylie Elementary, retiring in 2001. Polly was honored as the CMS Teacher of the Year in 1991, and her legacy includes a handprint tiled wall displayed at Discovery Place Museum, acknowledging her exceptional contributions to Science Education.

In addition to her educational prowess, Polly was a talented storyteller, captivating young audiences and adults alike through her engaging lessons and devotionals at First Christian and SouthPark Christian churches. She demonstrated her enthusiasm for storytelling by visiting her grandchildren’s classrooms, often dressed in character costumes, to bring stories to life. Those who knew her remember Polly as a joyful person whose positivity uplifted everyone around her.

Polly is preceded in death by her parents, husband Troy Anglin, and sister Nancy Brown. She is survived by her son, Travis Anglin (Sheree) of Charlotte, and daughter, Beth Garland (Rickey) of Hampstead, NC. Polly also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Alex Chaney and Emma, Sadie, and Cooper Garland, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews and her lifelong friend, Libby Cone.

A visitation to honor Polly Anglin will be held on June 23, 2025, from 11 am to 1 pm at McEwen Funeral Service – Pineville Chapel. Following the visitation, a graveside service will take place at Crown Memorial Park at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Polly Anglin, recognizing her impact on education and her resilience throughout her life.
