Lincolnton Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Roger Dale Walker

Lincolnton is mourning the passing of Roger Dale Walker, a cherished member of the community, who left us at the age of 71 on April 12, 2025. Roger’s life was a wonderful tapestry woven with love, family, and hard work that touched many lives around him.

A Life Well-Lived

Roger was born on June 16, 1953, in Lincoln County, where he spent his early years as a part of a loving family. He was the son of the late Elvin and Pearl Byrd Hill. Along his journey, he faced the tragic loss of his siblings: three brothers—Edward, Jimmy, and Danny Walker—and a sister, Linda Sue Walker. Despite these heartaches, Roger forged a path of resilience and compassion.

At just 12 years old, Roger formed a special bond with the LV and Bonnie Finger family, who graciously welcomed him into their home. It is these early connections that shaped him into the loving husband and father he became.

Family Man

Roger’s greatest achievement was undoubtedly his family. He shared 35 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Malia Walker. Together, they raised a beautiful family composed of two sons, Chris Walker from Newton, and Jamie Walker, along with his wife Jennifer, from Lincolnton. The Walker family’s warmth also extends to two daughters: Kelsey Leirmoe and her husband Malcolm from Rock Hill, SC, and Kendall Taylor with her husband Cory from Maiden.

Roger’s legacy continues through his seven adoring grandchildren, whom he famously referred to as “Popaw.” The list includes Allie Powers, Khloe Taylor, Addie Leirmoe, Abernathy “AJ” Leirmoe, Walker Leirmoe, John Austin Ward, and Grant Ward. His bond with his grandchildren was incredibly special, as he was known for cherishing every moment spent with them.

A Career Dedicated to Excellence

When it came to work, Roger dedicated over 30 years to the textile industry, a field in which he took great pride. Later on, he ventured out on his own, establishing a successful painting and pressure washing business that lasted for 12 years. Not stopping there, he also launched a cabinet finishing business before concluding his career as a maintenance officer with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Known for his work ethic, Roger was determined to always complete jobs correctly and put forth his best effort in all that he did.

A Passion for the Outdoors and Community

While his career was important to him, Roger’s heart truly thrived in the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter who found solace in nature. He relished sharing meals with Malia, always ensuring quality time was spent together. Roger’s love for community service was also notable; he was a devout Christian who was actively involved in various mission trips and diligently prepared meals for church events.

Memorial Service Details

A memorial service to celebrate Roger’s life is set for April 15, 2025, at noon at the Boger City Baptist Church in Lincolnton. Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Boger City Baptist Church, located at 2201 E Main St., Lincolnton, NC 28092. Arrangements for Roger’s memorial are being handled by Burke Mortuary in Maiden.
