NEW YORK — UConn head coach Dan Hurley made headlines at the Big East Media Day when he boldly claimed that the Big East Conference is currently the best conference in men’s college basketball. Hurley is looking to lead his No. 3-ranked Huskies to a historic three-peat, something that hasn’t been accomplished since John Wooden’s legendary UCLA teams of the 1960s and 70s.
During the event, Hurley pointed out that the Big East has consistently proven its strength with four national championships in the last eight years. He took a clear jab at other leagues, suggesting it’s difficult for conferences to call themselves the best without having the championship trophies to back it up. While he didn’t specifically name the Big Ten, it was hard not to draw parallels, especially since that conference has not won an NCAA title since 2000.
Hurley referred to UConn’s recent success, especially last season when his team defeated Big Ten’s Purdue in the title game by 15 points and earlier dominated Illinois by 25 points. He highlighted that since 2000, the Big East has claimed eight national titles, showcasing its competitive nature against others like the ACC and the SEC.
The conversation turned to the lack of respect the Big East appears to receive in national rankings. Hurley criticized the AP Poll for not ranking more of their teams, arguing that at least five should be in the Top 20. He expressed disappointment that only three teams from the Big East made it to the NCAA Tournament last year, mentioning that it seemed like the conference was not adequately represented.
“I don’t know if we have a strong enough voice in that room,” Hurley said, referring to the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. He conveyed his aim to focus on UConn’s performance to ensure they earn a spot in the tournament.
As the college basketball season approaches, Hurley’s confidence in his conference and team sets the stage for an exciting year ahead.
