Ryce’s Career-High 22 Points Not Enough In Winthrop’s Loss At High Point

In a thrilling college basketball matchup, Winthrop University faced a defeated at High Point despite a career-high 22 points by Jada Ryce. The heated contest ended with a final score of 75-68, showing High Point’s dominance.

A Strong Start

The game began on a high note for Winthrop as they led the first quarter, thanks to a three-pointer by Blessing Okoh. Despite a four-minute scoring gap, a layup by Marissa Gasaway put Winthrop back in the lead. Their strong performance throughout the first quarter resulted in an 18-17 lead over High Point.

High Point Takes Charge

The second quarter, however, saw a standout performance from High Point. In a stunning 23-5 run, they took a 40-23 lead into halftime, leaving Winthrop trailing behind. Winthrop hit a rough patch in this quarter, scoring only two field goals and remaining scoreless for nearly six minutes.

The Fightback

Down by 17 at halftime, Winthrop made a massive comeback in the third quarter, reducing the gap to 40-36. A notable standout in this quarter was Marc, who delivered 10th double-figure scoring in the season. Despite Winthrop’s fighting spirit, High Point managed to maintain a ten-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Nail-Biting Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter saw an equal split of points in the first six minutes, leaving High Point still in a 10-point lead. In a final push, Winthrop scored eight of the next ten points, bringing the game to a four-point contest within the final minute. However, High Point managed to repel their effort and secured victory.

Statistical Standouts and Next Game

Despite the loss, the game was marked by several significant individual and team performances. Jada Ryce led the team with a career-high 22 points, supported by Marc with 18 points. Despite their best efforts, Winthrop’s 80% field score in the third quarter and 70% free throw accuracy during the game were unable to secure a win.

Winthrop now looks forward to their next game against UNC Asheville on Saturday, Feb. 3. Having already secured a 70-64 win against the Bulldogs in an overtime thriller in January, Winthrop will be aiming to sweep the regular season series on their home court.
