Eagles Triumph Over Presbyterian College: Achieving A Fourth Consecutive Victory

In a thrilling match held on Wednesday, the Winthrop men’s basketball team charged towards its fourth straight victory with a resounding 81-71 victory over Presbyterian College.

First Half Highlights

The Eagles took early control of the game with Chase Claxton opening with an impressive dunk from the baseline followed by a triple from Kasen Harrison. Further escalating their lead to seven points just two and a half minutes into the game were efforts by Nick Johnson. By the 11:31 mark of the first half, the Eagles had assembled an 8-0 run aided by a spectacular four-point play from K.J. Doucet.

With contributions from every corner of the team, Kelton Talford and Micheal Anumba made significant efforts to push the lead to 13 points with just 7:48 remaining in the half. By the end of the first half, the Eagles were securely leading with a nine-point advantage over the Blue Hose.

Second Half Highlights

In the second half, the Eagles quickly rebuilt their double-digits lead as Claxton marked his second three of the game, only 41 seconds into the half. The Blue Hose made numerous efforts to close the gap, but the Eagles continually responded with increased vigour.

It was Kasen Harrison who sparked a 7-0 run, leading the Eagles to expand their lead to double-figures at 63-52. The Eagles responded to every attempt made by the Blue Hose to close in, ensuring they maintained at least a three-possession game all through the remaining second half.

Game Summary

Winthrop outshone its opponent with a 10-of-20 behind the arc and an overall 54 percent from the field performance. However, they were slightly edged on the boards 32-31 by the Blue Hose but made up for it with a clear advantage in free throw numbers, finishing 21-of-25 at the free throw line.

Three players ended in double-figures with Harrison tying his season-high of 19 points, followed by Talford with 13 and Claxton contributing 12 points. Despite the strong opposition, the Eagles made 10 of their final 14 shots, solidifying their victory.

Final Remarks

This victory marks the 50th win for Mark Prosser as head coach of the Eagles and is also his 200th career game. This victory bodes positively for the Winthrop men’s basketball team as they gear up to take on Radford at their home court on Saturday, 13th January.
