Eagles Stumble Against Rutgers In Season Opener At Home

Rock Hill, SC – A Disappointing Start to the 2024 Season

The much-anticipated season opener for the Winthrop University baseball team ended in disappointment, as they fell to Rutgers at the home ground, Winthrop Ballpark. The Friday afternoon game concluded with a 14-5 loss for the Eagles, marking a 0-1 overall win-loss ratio for the team and 27-17 all-time in season openers.

Promising Start but Unable to Sustain Momentum

Signs in the first half were positive as the Eagles took an early lead, with Ricky Teel scoring the first run off a wild pitch. The energy remained high into the second inning, with the Eagles scoring four runs propelling them to a 5-0 lead. Despite this promising start, the home team was unable to keep the momentum going, failing to score for the remainder of the game.

Rutgers, on the other hand, showcased a strong comeback. After a scoreless initial three innings, they tallied up to 14 runs over the last six innings, effectively overshadowing Winthrop’s early lead and securing their victory.

Key Contributors

Despite the defeat, Nicholas Badillo stood out for the Eagles, going 1-2, and driving in two runs. Unfortunately, Riley Huge, who took the loss, could not stave off the Rutgers offense effectively enough to maintain the early lead.

Upcoming Game

Despite the opening setback, the Eagles are looking ahead, gearing up to face Rutgers once again in the second game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m., at the Winthrop Ballpark. The team will be eager to even up the score and kick-start their journey in the 2024 season.
