Winthrop University Knocks Down Radford in Overtime Clash

On the night of February 14, 2024, the women’s basketball team of Winthrop University demonstrated tremendous resilience and skill to mark a thrilling overtime victory over Radford University. The intense encounter saw Winthrop pull off a 54-51 win, balancing their Big South record. With this victory, Winthrop’s women’s basketball team has moved to a 12-13 overall record, with 6-6 in the Big South division.

Exciting Match Details

As the first quarter of the game unfolded, the Eagles showed impressive defensive progress, limiting Radford’s scoring to just six points. But as the game progressed, both teams fiercely fought tooth and nail, resulting in numerous lead changes and ties.

In the final quarter, as Radford was leading 46-42 at the halfway mark, Winthrop embarked on a 7-2 run, gaining a 49-48 lead with about two minutes left on the clock. Reaching a deadlock, the game was tipped into an overtime face-off.

Overtime Triumph

Down 51-49 more than a minute into the overtime period, Winthrop tactfully scored four quick points, gaining a 53-51 lead by the 2:53 mark. The team then successfully pulled off a free throw to secure a three-point lead, effectively marking their win. On the other end, Winthrop’s defense remained steadfast, successfully counteracting Radford’s offense till the final whistle of the game.

Outstanding Athlete Performances

Key contributors to Winthrop’s victory included Nyah Stallings with 13 points and five rebounds, Jada Ryce with 11 points, Marissa Gasaway who contributed eight points and 15 rebounds, and Ronaltha Marc who also scored 11 points along with three rebounds and three successful steals.

It was Marc’s 12th double-digit scoring game this season, Gasaway’s 13th double-digit rebounding game, Ryce’s 14th double-digit scoring game, and Stallings’ fourth double-digit scoring game. This was Winthrop’s third overtime game this season, with two victories including the latest against Radford University.

Onward and Upward

Following their victory and with high spirits, Winthrop University’s women’s basketball team now looks forward to facing off against Presbyterian College on February 21, 2024. With this victory in their stride, Winthrop hopes to further strengthen their standing in the Big South division.
