Piedmont Medical Center has filed permits to build a new freestanding emergency department near the Lake Wylie community in York County, joining a growing wave of healthcare infrastructure investment in one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing regions, the Rock Hill Herald reported on May 11, 2026.
The permit, filed with York County in April, covers a standalone emergency department at 233 Catamount Drive near the Five Points intersection, on the north side of the Harris Teeter-anchored Westlake Village shopping center currently under construction at the junction of S.C. 55 and S.C. 49, according to the Herald’s reporting by staff writer John Marks. The permit does not list project size, cost, or a construction timeline, and a Piedmont representative declined to discuss the project with the Herald.
The Lake Wylie facility would be Piedmont’s latest expansion in York County. The Tenet Health-owned hospital system already operates the Gold Hill Emergency Department, a more than 17,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2020, and a 100-bed hospital in Fort Mill opened four years ago. Piedmont’s flagship 282-bed Rock Hill hospital, which opened in 1983, was the only hospital in York County for decades before the regional healthcare buildout accelerated.
In a significant shift in service delivery, Piedmont will move many of its women’s services — including labor and delivery — from the Rock Hill hospital to the Fort Mill hospital in the coming days to meet growing demand from the county’s northward population growth. Fort Mill is among South Carolina’s fastest-growing communities.
The medical competition in York County has intensified dramatically. Charlotte-based Atrium Health approved $450 million to build its own Fort Mill hospital late last year, and the Medical University of South Carolina has a $300 million hospital and medical office complex under construction in Indian Land. Atrium also purchased Fort Mill EMS last year; Piedmont responded by acquiring River Hill/Lake Wylie EMS.
Lake Wylie has evolved from a sparse collection of lakeside properties into one of the region’s more urbanized communities, sitting on the North Carolina border with access to healthcare options in both Gaston and Mecklenburg counties. A Piedmont emergency room there would serve several large subdivisions currently under construction near the Five Points area, which is positioned as Lake Wylie’s next major residential growth corridor, according to the Herald’s reporting.
Separately, Piedmont Medical Center Fort Mill CEO Christopher Mitchell is scheduled to update Lancaster County Council on May 11 about the company’s freestanding emergency room in Indian Land — a 10,000-square-foot facility off Charlotte Highway, in the Parkstone at Indian Land development, set to open within weeks of the council meeting.
Other providers have also moved into the Lake Wylie area: Gastonia, North Carolina-based CaroMont Health expanded into Lake Wylie with family medicine, vascular, neurology, pediatric, and women’s services, plus an urgent care facility. An Affinity Health Center operates in nearby Clover as well.
The York County Regional Chamber of Commerce, which represents nearly 700 businesses in the Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and surrounding areas, has cited healthcare expansion as a key economic indicator for the county’s continued growth as a Charlotte metro suburb.
