CLOVER, S.C. — A wanted driver was hit by gunfire from two York County Sheriff’s Office deputies Wednesday after a short chase ended on Lloyd White Road near the state line, according to Sheriff Tony Breeden, covering the Clover area.

Breeden said deputies were helping Clover police find someone with open warrants when a stop went sideways. The driver would not follow orders, struck a patrol car, fled, then wrecked in a roadside ditch. As deputies ordered him out, Breeden said the man aimed a firearm at an officer and both deputies shot, striking him. No deputy was injured.

The sheriff’s office also had reports the driver had lately threatened self-harm. Names of the driver and the two deputies were not released. Both deputies were put on paid administrative leave while the case is reviewed.
