ROCK HILL, S.C. — Winthrop twice pulled within a goal of Longwood on Saturday evening in Rock Hill, but the Lancers answered both times and left Eagle Field with a 4-2 Big South men’s soccer win.
Longwood junior Brando Bedolla had a hand in every Lancers goal, scoring twice and adding his 12th assist of the year, a total that leads the nation. Sophomore Youssef Shafei opened the scoring in the 16th minute after Bedolla blocked a clearance by Winthrop keeper Euan Brindley, and Bedolla doubled the lead before halftime.
Jorge Perez got the Eagles on the board in the 67th minute off a Juma Baden feed. Freshman Vicent Martinez restored the two-goal cushion in the 81st minute, and Baden cut it to 3-2 three minutes later on a Daniel Restrepo pass. Just 28 seconds after that, Bedolla curled a free kick inside the post to seal it.
Baden and Perez now have eight goals apiece, sharing the Winthrop team lead. Longwood outshot the Eagles 16-9, with a 7-3 edge on target, and the teams were whistled for 32 fouls combined.
Winthrop, now 5-8-1 and 2-3 in league play, steps out of conference action Wednesday, Oct. 21, with a 6 p.m. match at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
