Severe Thunderstorm Alert in York County: What You Need to Know

Residents of York County, rejoice! Or rather, brace yourselves. A severe thunderstorm warning has just been issued as a powerful storm system rolls through the area. The National Weather Service dispatched this warning at 9:32 p.m. on Thursday, just in the nick of time to prepare for the impending weather madness. This alert will remain effective until 10 p.m., so it’s the perfect opportunity to get those safety measures in place.

Storm Details

As of the latest report, a hefty thunderstorm was spotted about 6 miles southeast of Rock Hill, close to a little town called Lesslie. And it’s not just your regular downpour—we’re talking about wind gusts that could reach an impressive 60 miles per hour! Combine that with some penny-sized hail, measuring around 0.75 inches, and you’ve got quite the storm brewing.

As usual, with such wild weather, damage to trees and power lines can be expected. The areas most likely to face the brunt of the tempest include Newport, Lesslie, Catawba, and Rock Hill. Pull out those flashlights and snacks, folks—safety first!

Earlier Thunderstorm Activity

This isn’t the first time York County has faced some stormy weather today. Earlier at 8:16 p.m., a strong thunderstorm warning was highlighted, lasting until 8:45 p.m. This earlier beast also delivered wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour accompanied by that pesky penny-sized hail. At that time, the storm was measured 7 miles north of York, near Clover, glide northeast at a speed of 20 mph. Sounds like a busy night for the weather!

Other locations that might have felt the rain earlier include Steele Creek, Crowders, south Gastonia, Lowell, Clover, Lake Wylie, Cramerton, Bethany, McAdenville, and Gastonia. If you were out and about, we hope you made it home safe and dry!

What’s Next?

The storm warnings continue. There’s a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until midnight for the Piedmont region of North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina. So keep your ears peeled, your phones charged, and your weather apps close by.

And while we’re talking about thunderstorms, here’s a little fact for you. Did you know that around 25 million lightning strikes occur in the United States each year? That’s right! However, with great power comes great responsibility, as about 20 fatalities result from these lightning strikes annually. The risk increases as thunderstorms approach, peaking when the storm is right above. So, safety first!

Staying Safe During the Storm

When thunderstorms roll in, it’s wise to take precautions. The National Weather Service offers some handy tips on how to stay safe. Always move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building, if possible. Gear up with all your safety essentials like flashlights, batteries, and a cozy place to ride it out until the storm passes.

Also, if you’re traveling during heavy rain, beware of hydroplaning. When water builds up on the roads, it can cause vehicles to slide, leading to loss of control. Always drive cautiously and allow extra time for your travels during these kinds of storms.

In summary, folks, stay informed, stay safe, and keep an eye on the weather as the storms make their rounds through York County. Here’s hoping for clear skies soon!
