Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Greenville and Spartanburg

Dark storm clouds over Greenville signaling severe thunderstorm warning

News Summary

Residents of Greenville and Spartanburg counties are urged to take cover as a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued. Expected weather includes strong thunderstorms, pea-sized hail, and wind gusts up to 40 mph. The National Weather Service has advised securing outdoor items and seeking shelter due to lightning risks. Historical data shows this is not the first warning of the month, emphasizing the need for vigilance as summer storms become more frequent. Stay informed and safe during this weather alert.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Greenville and Spartanburg Counties

Hey there, folks! If you’re in or around Greenville and Spartanburg counties, it’s time to pay attention to the skies. The National Weather Service (NWS) has just issued an updated weather alert, and let me tell you, the storm brewing is no joke! At precisely 3:33 p.m. on Thursday, a severe thunderstorm warning kicked into gear, and it’s expected to stick around until 4:30 p.m.

What’s Coming Your Way?

Brace yourselves, because we’re looking at some pretty strong thunderstorms rolling through the area. You can expect pea-sized hail measuring about 0.25 inches along with wind gusts reaching up to a whopping 40 mph! If you’re planning on being outdoors, the storm just may force you to rethink your plans.

Just moments before the warning was issued, at 3:32 p.m., Doppler radar picked up a cluster of thunderstorms moving from around Columbus to about 15 miles southeast of Hendersonville. This storm is lumbering eastward at a leisurely pace of 5 mph. So yes, it’s moving, but not too quickly!

Take Cover!

The NWS is urging everyone to seek shelter if you’re out and about. Why, you ask? Well, the skies are lighting up quite a bit with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. Just so you know, lightning can hit as far as 10 miles away from a thunderstorm, and it strikes the U.S. around 25 million times every single year. That adds up to about 20 people unfortunately losing their lives from it annually— a sobering thought indeed!

It’s important to remember that the chances of lightning increase as the storm creeps closer, peaking when it’s right above you. So, the best safety tip during thunderstorms is to head inside!

Keeping Safe During the Storm

With the anticipation of gusty winds potentially knocking down tree limbs and whisking about unsecured objects, you should definitely secure anything outside that could become a projectile. Minor hail damage to outdoor items is also a possibility, so be cautious!

Your local area is feeling the effects of this storm too! Residents in locations such as Forest City, Columbus, Landrum, and Tryon are all within the trajectory of the storm. If you’re part of these communities or even nearby—like Campobello, Tigerville, Lake Bowen, Mill Spring, and Glassy Mountain—be especially vigilant.

A History of Thunder and Hail

This isn’t the first time this month that Greenville and Spartanburg counties have been under a severe thunderstorm warning. Back on June 1, residents faced wind gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail! It seems our summer weather is proving to be quite a rollercoaster.

The NWS does encourage everyone to stay updated on weather alerts. If you encounter any damaging winds, hail, or flooding, make sure to report it to them. They’re always eager to hear from you and help keep the community informed about what’s happening.

Stay Alert and Stay Safe!

The NWS will continue to monitor the weather closely, and it’s crucial for all residents to be vigilant and prepared for any sudden changes. It’s always a good idea to move to the lowest floor interior room of your house until the weather calms down.

So keep your eyes on the skies, stay indoors, and don’t take any chances. We hope this storm passes quickly, and everyone stays safe!
