NarroWay Productions, the Fort Mill faith-based dinner theater that has grown into one of the largest operations of its kind in the country, is marking 30 years on stage with a week of family-focused celebrations for the community that has supported it since its earliest days.
The theater traces its roots back decades to Whitesburg, Kentucky, where its two founders worked as youth ministers writing original shows for their church’s youth team before eventually taking those productions outside the walls of the church itself. One of the founders has described a moment early on when she felt she heard specific words telling her what to call the venture, a story the theater still shares as part of its origin lore even as it has grown into a large-scale operation staging elaborate live productions.
That evolution is on full display in the theater’s current programming, which blends live actors with a menagerie of animals as part of its Bible-based storytelling. Among the performers joining this year’s anniversary celebrations is the venue’s newest addition, a baby camel, who is set to make her first appearance on the NarroWay stage as part of the milestone festivities.
The 30th-anniversary programming includes a free community event centered on the theater’s origin story, inviting past guests, performers and anyone who has been part of NarroWay’s history over the decades to attend and reconnect. The celebration functions as much as a reunion for longtime supporters as a marketing moment for newcomers who may not know the theater’s roots.
Staff who keep the operation running day to day include an operations manager who also serves as the venue’s media contact, an executive administrator, a theater manager and the head of the theater’s education department, a reflection of how the operation has expanded well beyond its founders’ original two-person youth ministry effort.
For the Fort Mill and greater Rock Hill area, NarroWay has become a fixture on the regional entertainment calendar, drawing visitors from across the Carolinas for dinner-theater productions built around Biblical stories and staged with live animals, elaborate sets and a cast that has grown alongside the venue’s audience.
