A Rock Hill-area man is sharing his survival story ahead of Aortic Dissection Awareness Day on September 19, hoping to warn others about a condition he says gave him almost no time to react before it nearly killed him.
The man, now in his late 50s, was 55 years old in October 2022 when he was struck by sudden, severe back pain and rushed to the hospital. Doctors determined within minutes that he had suffered an aortic dissection, a tear in the inner lining of the aorta, the body’s main artery carrying blood from the heart outward. He said the tear extended from his carotid artery down to his heart and from his heart all the way to his groin, an injury so extensive that doctors warned him he might not survive it.
A vascular surgeon with Piedmont Medical Network treated him and performed two life-saving procedures to repair the damage. The surgeon said years of high blood pressure can gradually wear on the artery’s inner lining until it tears, but he acknowledged that aortic dissections often give patients and doctors very little warning before they strike. That unpredictability is part of why the surgeon says raising awareness matters: even when the disease itself can’t always be predicted, education can help people recognize symptoms faster and understand risk factors they can manage.
The survivor described the pain in blunt terms, calling it unimaginable, and said he has carried a new perspective on life ever since. He said he now tries to take advantage of every day, citing specific goals that keep him motivated, including watching his one remaining unmarried daughter walk down the aisle and meeting grandchildren from each of his daughters.
Doctors treating aortic dissection patients generally point to a short list of prevention steps: regular checkups, blood-pressure control and quitting smoking, since tobacco use is considered a major contributor to the kind of arterial damage that can lead to a dissection. For a condition that can escalate from first symptom to life-threatening emergency in a matter of minutes, physicians say those routine measures are often the most realistic tools patients have to reduce their risk before a crisis ever begins.
His story arrives as the Rock Hill area, like much of the country, observes Aortic Dissection Awareness Day this week, an occasion organizers use to push people toward blood-pressure screenings and conversations with their doctors about family history and cardiovascular risk factors that can quietly build for years before a sudden rupture forces the issue.
