Charlotte, NC – The Carolina Panthers made significant roster changes on Thursday, including the release of veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney. The decision comes as the team prepares for their rookie minicamp and aims to reshape the roster leading into the 2025 NFL season.
Clowney, who is 32 years old, had a notable performance last season, tying for the team high with 5.5 sacks. He was acquired by the Panthers in March 2024, allowing him the opportunity to play for his hometown team in Rock Hill, South Carolina. However, the team has opted to move forward without him, making room for younger talent.
In a move to bolster their linebacker corps, the Panthers signed Patrick Jones II, a 26-year-old former linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings, who recorded 7.0 sacks last season. This addition aims to infuse the defense with a fresh dynamic as the team anticipates the development of their new draft picks.
During the 2025 NFL Draft, the Panthers selected two edge rushers, Nic Scourton in the second round and Princely Umanmielen in the third round. Scourton, who will be just 21 during the preseason, and Umanmielen, recently turned 23, are expected to play significant roles in the upcoming season. The Panthers also have other options at the linebacker position, including D.J. Wonnum, DJ Johnson, Amaré Barno, Kenny Dyson, Thomas Incoom, and Boogie Basham to strengthen their roster depth.
As part of the roster restructuring, the Panthers also placed running back Jonathon Brooks on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list following an ACL tear sustained in Week 14 of the previous season. As a result, he will be sidelined for the entire 2025 season, further necessitating adjustments to the team’s roster. The Panthers waived tight end Colin Granger with an injury settlement among other cuts, including defensive tackle Popo Aumavae, and releasing tight end Jordan Matthews and receiver Dax Milne. Additionally, they waived receiver T.J. Luther, offensive lineman Andrew Raym, and defensive tackle Jerrod Clark.
Following these changes, the Panthers now have a roster of 62 players as they head into the upcoming rookie minicamp. In preparation for integrating eight drafted rookies and various undrafted rookie free agents, the Panthers confirmed contracts with seven of their draft picks and 19 undrafted free agents on the same day the roster adjustments were announced.
The rookie minicamp will begin on Friday and will include drafted players, undrafted free agents, and tryout players. The practices aim to build on the experiences and lessons shared by veteran players such as Adam Thielen and Jalen Coker, who will help guide the rookie talents as they adjust to professional football.
Prior to these recent roster changes, the Panthers conducted team volunteer workouts at Bank of America Stadium on April 29, 2025, providing an opportunity for players to familiarize themselves with the plays and strategies the coaching staff plans to implement for the upcoming season.
