Severe Thunderstorm & Lightning Warnings for Charleston Area

Dramatic thunderstorm clouds over Charleston area

News Summary

Charleston residents are under a severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service. The warning affects several areas, including Berkeley and vicinity, with gusty winds and lightning expected. Residents are advised to stay informed and seek shelter during the storms, as conditions may lead to hazardous travel and potential property damage. It’s essential to remain vigilant with changing weather patterns, ensuring safety for both home and loved ones.

Severe Thunderstorm & Lightning Warnings for Charleston Area: What You Need to Know

Charleston residents, it’s that time again when the weather decides to shake things up! The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Charleston area, particularly for inland Berkeley, starting at 6:11 p.m. on Sunday and lasting until 7 p.m.. So, hold onto your hats because things are about to get a bit stormy!

What’s Happening?

Doppler radar has picked up on a strong thunderstorm currently hovering over Bonneau, moving southwest at a cozy 5 mph. While it may seem slow, don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security! Gusty winds are on their way, and we’re talking potential wind speeds that could knock down tree limbs and send unsecured objects flying. No one wants their lawn chairs joining a spontaneous adventure!

Who’s at Risk?

If you’re in areas like Moncks Corner, Bonneau, Bonneau Beach, Southern Lake Moultrie, or Northern Lake Moultrie – listen up! Other locations to be aware of include Pinopolis, Cross, Wampee, Macbeth, and Simpson Crossing. Make sure you’ve got a plan in place as strong thunderstorms can cause chaos in a hurry.

Stay Updated and Stay Safe

During these stormy spells, it’s essential to stay informed. The NWS strongly recommends checking your NOAA Weather Radio, local news updates, or notifications on your mobile devices. Don’t forget to seek safe shelter indoors, whether that’s in a sturdy building or a vehicle. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is on the menu with these storms, and remember—lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a storm. If you hear thunder, consider yourself warned—it’s close enough to pose a risk!

More Thunderstorms Ahead

This isn’t the first rodeo for severe thunderstorms in the region. A warning was also issued on Friday evening at 8:01 p.m. for Berkeley and Charleston counties, which lasted until 8:45 p.m.. Wind gusts then were reported to possibly reach up to 60 mph with thunderstorms stretching from Sullivan’s Island all the way down near Kiawah Island, moving southeast at 25 mph. Unfortunately, damage to roofs, siding, and trees might be on the horizon.

Areas of Concern

The most affected communities included North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Hanahan, Johns Island, and even the famous Downtown Charleston area all the way to Fort Sumter and Daniel Island. And let’s not ignore the roof over your head—these storms can wreak havoc on structures exposed to strong winds and torrential rain.

Be Cautious When Traveling

Anyone planning to be on the roads should exercise extra caution during these storms. Flooded roadways could lead to dangerous conditions, including hydroplaning, where vehicles can uncontrollably slide on wet surfaces. Beware of water buildup in front of your tires as you drive—it’s a recipe for a wild ride!

Final Thoughts: Prepare, Don’t Panic!

Severe thunderstorms are a reminder for all of us to be prepared and stay aware of changing weather conditions. It’s not just about keeping your home safe, but also about ensuring you and your loved ones are well-protected during these inevitably stormy times. Charleston, let’s weather this together!
