Tega Cay Golf Club
Lake Wylie views on six different holes -- you can't ask for prettier. The Stadium and Cove nines play very differently. Brought my dad for his birthday and we both walked away wanting to come back next weekend.
Memorable Hole: Hole #4 on Stadium -- the par 3 with the lake right behind the green
Toughest Green: Hole #8 on Cove -- two-tier green with a ridge running through it
Best Food: Lakeside patio -- get the chicken sandwich and a sweet tea
Fort Mill Golf Club
Tom Jackson design and you can feel it. The conditioning was excellent for a public course in late spring. Greens were stimping around 11 by the afternoon. Lost three balls on hole #16 -- water everywhere.
Memorable Hole: Hole #16 -- forced carry over a lake on the second shot
Toughest Green: Hole #11 -- subtle break that fooled all four of us
Best Food: Pulled pork plate at the clubhouse grill
Chester Golf Club
Hidden gem 25 minutes south of Rock Hill. 0 weekday rate including cart. The course was in surprisingly great shape. Local member let us play through and gave us tips on hole #14 -- saved me a double.
Memorable Hole: Hole #14 -- blind tee shot over a hill to a hidden fairway
Toughest Green: Hole #2 -- two-tiered green is faster than it looks
Best Food: Hot dog and a beer for at the snack bar -- you can't beat it
Spring Lake Country Club
Best public-access deal in York County. Bermuda fairways were tight in October. The par 5s give you legit eagle looks if you can carry it 240. Caddies available if you ask -- worth it.
Memorable Hole: Hole #18 -- reachable par 5 with a pond guarding the green
Toughest Green: Hole #9 -- false front, three-putt city if you're long
Best Food: Pimento cheese sandwich at the turn -- classic
Catawba Country Club
Played in our member-guest and had a blast. The front nine is tight and demands accuracy, the back opens up a bit. Fast bentgrass greens this time of year. Pro shop staff treated us like family.
Memorable Hole: Hole #12 -- island-style green over a finger of the lake
Toughest Green: Hole #5 -- crowned green sheds everything off the back
Best Food: Sunday brunch buffet -- the shrimp and grits are top tier
Rock Hill Country Club
Old-school Donald Ross feel even though it's not a Ross. Walked 18 in 3 hours flat on a Tuesday morning. Greens roll true and the bunkers are well-kept. Shot 79 from the blues -- happy with that on this layout.
Memorable Hole: Hole #7 -- dogleg left with the creek in play
Toughest Green: Hole #13 -- back-to-front slope is brutal in summer
Best Food: Cheeseburger and fries after the round on the patio
