2026 Updated Guide

Rock Hill, South Carolina sits at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering golfers seven distinct courses within York County and more than a dozen additional layouts within a 30-minute drive. From the historic Country Club of Rock Hill — one of only a handful of Donald Ross designs in the Carolinas, established in 1908 — to River Falls Plantation, a Gary Player championship layout in Duncan with Diamond Zoysia greens, the Piedmont delivers golf experiences typically reserved for destination markets.

The region's Zone 8a climate supports year-round play, with Bermuda and Zoysia fairways thriving through the long growing season. Woodfin Ridge Golf Club in Inman stretches to 7,107 yards — the longest course in the area — with panoramic Blue Ridge Mountain views from the back nine. Palmetto Hills Golf Club, designed by George Cobb (the architect behind Augusta National's Par-3 Course and Quail Hollow in Charlotte), was originally nicknamed "The Widowmaker" for its demanding elevation changes and Champion Bermuda greens.

Rock Hill's golf scene benefits from its proximity to major tournament venues: Augusta National is approximately 70 miles to the southwest, Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head is 3.5 hours south, and Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte — host of the PGA Championship — is just 80 miles northeast. The annual BMW Charity Pro-Am on the Korn Ferry Tour brings professional golf directly to the Greenville-Rock Hill corridor each June.

Spartanburg SC Golf Courses

Seven courses profiled — from historic Donald Ross designs to Gary Player's championship layout and the most accessible public options in York County.
Carolina Country Club
PRIVATE
2355 Carolina Country Club Rd, Rock Hill, SC • Tom Jackson • Est. 1984
7,069
72
74.5
138

Greens: Bermuda

Rated one of the finest private layouts in the Piedmont, Carolina Country Club stretches 7,069 yards of challenging Bermuda grass with heavy water hazard involvement throughout. Tom Jackson's 1984 design demands precise course management and rewards accurate iron play.

Heavy water hazards throughout. Accurate tee shots essential on 14 of 18 holes.

Pro Tip
With heavy water in play, favor the fat side of every fairway. Bermuda rough grabs the hosel — open your stance in the rough to prevent the snap hook.
Country Club of Rock Hill
PRIVATE
2500 Country Club Rd, Rock Hill, SC • Donald Ross / Kris Spence • Est. 1908 / Restored 2008
6,648
72
71.6
128

Greens: Bent Grass

One of only a handful of Donald Ross designs in the Carolinas, the Country Club of Rock Hill traces its roots to 1908. Kris Spence's careful 2008 restoration preserved Ross's signature crowned greens, subtle false fronts, and deceptive angles while modernizing infrastructure.

Bent grass greens play faster and truer than Bermuda. Ross crowns require precise distance control.

Pro Tip
Donald Ross greens are designed to repel the ball. Never aim at the flag — play to the center of the green and two-putt. The crowned edges will punish aggressive approaches.
River Falls Plantation
PUBLIC
100 Player Blvd, Duncan, SC • Gary Player • Est. 1990
6,697
72
72.8
137

Greens: Diamond Zoysia

Gary Player's 1990 design at River Falls Plantation is the standout public-access layout in the region. Diamond Zoysia greens provide a premium putting surface typically found at private clubs. At approximately $70 in green fees, it delivers exceptional value for a course of this caliber.

Diamond Zoysia greens are among the finest public-course surfaces in the Carolinas.

Pro Tip
Gary Player designs reward aggression from the tee — the fairways are generous, but the approach angles are tight. Zoysia greens are firmer and faster than typical public courses; land shots short and let them feed.
Woodfin Ridge Golf Club
PUBLIC
215 S Woodfin Ridge Dr, Inman, SC • Unknown • Est. 2000
7,107
72
73.6
134

Greens: Bermuda

At 7,107 yards, Woodfin Ridge is the longest golf course in the Rock Hill area and plays as tough as it measures. The course sits near Lake Bowen with panoramic Blue Ridge Mountain views framing many of the back nine holes — a stunning visual setting paired with a genuine test of power golf.

Near Lake Bowen. Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop. Wind off the ridgeline can add significant difficulty.

Pro Tip
At over 7,100 yards, club selection is everything. The mountain backdrop can create deceiving visual cues on approach shots — trust your yardage book over your eyes.
Village Greens Golf Club
SEMI-PRIVATE
13921 Asheville Hwy, Gramling, SC • Russell Breeden • Est. 1969
6,379
72
71.2
127

Greens: Bermuda

Russell Breeden's 1969 design offers panoramic Blue Ridge Mountain views and some of the most scenic golf in the Upstate. The course features a memorable semi-island green par 3 that is one of the most photographed holes in Spartanburg County. Semi-private access means you can enjoy member-quality conditions without a full membership.

Signature semi-island green par 3. Blue Ridge Mountain panorama visible from multiple holes.

Pro Tip
The semi-island par 3 plays longer than it looks — the surrounding landscape compresses visual distance. Take one extra club and commit fully to the center of the green.
Palmetto Hills Golf Club
SEMI-PRIVATE
5451 S Pine St, Rock Hill, SC • George Cobb • Est. 1979
6,190
72
70.3
128

Greens: Champion Bermuda

George Cobb — the architect who also designed the Augusta National Par-3 Course — created Palmetto Hills in 1979. Originally nicknamed "The Widowmaker" for its demanding layout, the course retains its character with demanding angles and Champion Bermuda greens that provide a consistent, tour-quality putting surface.

Originally nicknamed "The Widowmaker." George Cobb also designed the Augusta National Par-3 Course.

Pro Tip
Champion Bermuda greens are grain-heavy. Always identify the grain direction before putting — putts into the grain are 20-30% slower. Grain runs toward water and toward the afternoon sun.
The Creek Golf Club
PUBLIC
640 Keltner Ave, Rock Hill, SC • Unknown • Est. 1966
6,653
72
71.0
117

Greens: Bermuda

The Creek Golf Club is the most accessible and affordable golf option in Rock Hill proper. Established in 1966, this city-accessible layout offers a no-frills, honest round of golf at a price that won't strain the budget. Ideal for beginners, high-handicappers, and anyone wanting a quick 18 without the premium price.

Lowest slope rating in the area (117). Most forgiving layout for higher handicappers.

Pro Tip
With a slope of 117, this is a great course to work on your game. Use it to practice course management — pick specific targets on every shot and track your spray patterns.

Spartanburg Golf Course Reviews

River Falls Plantation
Mike • Apr 10, 2026
Gary Player knew what he was doing. The Zoysia greens are unreal for a public course. Played from the Rock tees and shot 82. The back nine views alone are worth the green fee.
Memorable Hole: Hole #15 -- downhill par 3 over water
Toughest Green: Hole #4 -- three tiers with a false front
Best Food: The pulled pork sandwich at the turn
Village Greens Golf Club
Sarah • Apr 8, 2026
Brought my parents here visiting from Ohio. The mountain views had them stopping on every hole to take pictures. Course was in great shape for early April. Staff could not have been friendlier.
Memorable Hole: Hole #6 -- the semi-island green par 3
Toughest Green: Hole #1 -- sloped back to front, faster than it looks
Best Food: Chicken salad sandwich -- homemade and really good
Woodfin Ridge Golf Club
James • Apr 6, 2026
Played from the tips. 7,107 yards is no joke. The elevation changes on the front nine are incredible. Wind picked up on the back and turned it into a real challenge. Best mountain golf value in the Upstate.
Memorable Hole: Hole #7 -- elevated tee shot with water left
Toughest Green: Hole #10 -- uphill approach to a blind green
Best Food: Burger and quesadilla combo -- hit the spot after 18
Palmetto Hills Golf Club
David • Apr 4, 2026
They call it The Widowmaker for a reason. George Cobb built elevation into every hole. The Champion Bermuda greens were rolling true. Excellent value for a semi-private course.
Memorable Hole: Hole #14 -- 180-yard downhill par 3 with 50ft drop
Toughest Green: Hole #9 -- severely sloped with heavy grain

Golf Tips & Advice

Hit Them Long...
Longest drive. Craziest shot. Hole in one. Brag about it.
Travis -- Woodfin Ridge Golf Club
Driver went 315 off the elevated tee. Downhill plus tailwind. Ended up 40 yards short of the green on a 465-yard hole. Best drive of my life.
Longest Drive Hole #16 -- downhill par 4, wind at my back
Karen -- Village Greens Golf Club
8-iron on the semi-island green. Landed two feet past the pin and spun back in. My playing partners went absolutely crazy. First ace in 22 years of golf.
Hole in One Hole #6 -- the island green, 141 yards
Marcus -- River Falls Plantation
Bombed a drive then hit 3-wood from 215 to 8 feet. Drained the putt. Eagle on a Gary Player par 5. That Zoysia green held like velcro.
Eagle Hole #9 -- 483-yard par 5
Mix Them Strong...
Your favorite 19th hole. Where do you go after the round?
Derek
Ten minutes from River Falls. Cold local craft beer, outdoor patio, and they do not care if you show up in golf shoes. Perfect post-round spot.
RJ Rockers Brewing -- Son of a Peach wheat ale
Amanda
Downtown Spartanburg. Great for after a round at The Creek or Palmetto Hills. Their cider is something different and the food truck outside is always solid.
Ciclops Cyderi and Brewery -- Dry hopped cider on nitro
Paul
Why leave? Finish 18, park the cart, and the grill is right there. Burger, cold beer, Blue Ridge Mountain view. Does not get better.
Woodfin Ridge Clubhouse Grill -- Whatever is cold
