Location

Old Town historic district sits in central Rock Hill around the downtown street grid, north and west of the Main Street corridor and within a short drive of the Main Street and Caldwell Street core. It is roughly 1 mile from downtown Rock Hill, with access to I-77 via the downtown exits farther east and US-21 close by on the north side of the city. The district is well inland from the Catawba River and Lake Wylie, but Manchester Creek and nearby parks shape the broader area west and south of downtown.

Character

Old Town is a downtown-adjacent residential district made up mostly of early-20th-century houses, including mill-era cottages and modest bungalow and foursquare forms, with some later infill and renovated older homes. Lots are generally small to medium, and the street pattern is compact enough that many blocks are walkable. Mature street trees and older front setbacks give the area a settled look, and a drive through usually shows older wood-frame houses, a few brick buildings, and close-in residential streets tied to downtown Rock Hill.

History

Rock Hill grew from a railroad depot settlement laid out in 1851 and incorporated in 1852, then expanded quickly after textile mills and Winthrop College helped drive growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The downtown and nearby residential areas absorbed that growth, and districts around the core developed housing for merchants, professionals, and mill workers. Historic anchors nearby include the Rock Hill Cotton Factory, built in 1881, and the Stokes-Mayfield House, built in 1907; later downtown preservation and revitalization work helped stabilize the older street pattern.
