News Summary

A recent Winthrop University poll shows that South Carolina residents are divided over President Trump’s policies, with 46% disapproving of his economic management. The poll, which surveyed 1,211 people, indicates a slight improvement in optimism about the state’s economic direction. In terms of approval, only 44% of South Carolinians favor Trump, compared to 43% who view him unfavorably. The main concerns among voters include illegal immigration and assistance for disadvantaged populations, highlighting a complex political landscape as the state remains a Republican stronghold.

Rock Hill, South Carolina – A recent poll conducted by Winthrop University has revealed a notable division among voters in South Carolina in relation to President Donald Trump‘s policies. The poll indicates that 46% of South Carolinians disapprove of Trump’s management of the economy, paralleling a broader sentiment as a Reuters poll reflects that 53% of Americans share similar discontent regarding national economic conditions.

The findings from Winthrop show that 46% of South Carolinians believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, although this figure does reflect an encouraging 14% point improvement from a similar Winthrop poll conducted in April 2017. In contrast, approximately half of those surveyed feel that the economic situation in South Carolina is on the mend.

This significant polling data is released as President Trump commemorates his 150th day in office on June 19. The Winthrop University poll surveyed 1,211 individuals, with a margin of error of 2.82% and a confidence level of 95%.

In terms of overall approval ratings, only 44% of South Carolinians express approval for Trump, while 43% view him unfavorably. Comparatively, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk holds a negative perception among 45% of respondents, while only 35% have a favorable view of him; his initiative, the department of government efficiency (DOGE), has received a 37% approval rating.

Looking at the prevalent issues facing voters, Republicans in South Carolina primarily identify illegal immigration as the most pressing concern, while Democrats focus on improving assistance for disadvantaged populations. When asked about the overall direction of the nation, 47% of South Carolinians believe it is heading in the right direction, with 44% sharing that sentiment regarding their own state.

In the backdrop of recent elections, Trump has shown strong performance in traditional Republican strongholds such as York, Chester, and Lancaster counties, where he outperformed Camala Harris with 59% of the vote against her 40% as of late on election day. Notably, early voting accounted for approximately 54% of participation in York County, where 100,000 voters opted for early balloting. In Lancaster County, Trump secured 62% of total votes with a 54% early voting participation rate, while he garnered 58% of the votes in Chester County.

South Carolina continues to be viewed as a safe Republican state, with York, Chester, and Lancaster counties consistently leaning Republican in recent elections. Trump had previously celebrated victory in South Carolina during the 2016 presidential election and maintained a lead over Joe Biden in the 2020 election cycle.

Interestingly, both Trump and Harris opted not to campaign extensively in the Rock Hill region during the lead-up to the election, despite participating in a number of events in nearby Charlotte, North Carolina.

These polling insights and election results showcase a complex political landscape for South Carolina voters as they navigate their opinions on the current administration and its policies.
