Hall of Fame ceremony at Winthrop University

News Summary

Winthrop University is poised to honor Jack Frost, 74, as a 2025 Hall of Fame inductee. Recognized for his extensive contributions to sports information and public relations, Frost’s induction highlights his journey beginning in 1990 and his role in numerous athletic achievements at the university. The ceremony, scheduled for January 12, 2024, will also celebrate other distinguished athletes, emphasizing the lasting impact Frost has had on Winthrop and its student-athletes.

Rock Hill Celebrates Winthrop University’s Hall of Fame Inductee

Rock Hill is buzzing with excitement as Winthrop University shines a spotlight on one of its legendary figures. Jack Frost, at the vibrant age of 74, is set to be inducted into the university’s 2025 Hall of Fame class, and the news was shared with him in a delightful surprise. Assistant athletic director Brett Redden delivered the announcement, which Frost describes as the greatest honor of his long and storied athletic career.

A Legacy Begun in 1990

Frost’s thrilling journey at Winthrop began back in 1990 after he cultivated his skills in sports information and public relations at Eastern Kentucky. Initially, he had no plans to leave Eastern Kentucky, but due to shift in administration, opportunities arose that prompted him to explore new avenues. He found himself in a significant crossroads where a terminal contract awaited him, and it was during this time that his eyes shifted toward Winthrop University.

The position at Winthrop emerged just as Frost was ready for change. A bit of research on Winthrop sparked his interest, and by September 1990, he found himself interviewing. He instantly clicked with the department, accepting the position on the spot after the offer came from then-assistant athletic director Tom Hickman. October 15 of that same year marked the start of a remarkable 27-year journey for Frost.

Unforgettable Achievements

As Frost embraced his role at Winthrop, he witnessed a spectacular array of sporting accomplishments, including several thrilling conference championships. Among those highlights was the extraordinary run of the men’s basketball team, which made waves by advancing to four consecutive NCAA tournaments beginning in the 1998-99 season. Under the skilled guidance of coach Greg Marshall, the Wildcats cemented their place in history.

In the 2006-07 season, the men’s basketball team received national recognition by being ranked 25th in the AP Top 25. This season was particularly memorable, as Winthrop became the first team from the Big South Conference to win a first-round NCAA tournament game, famously defeating the powerhouse Notre Dame.

While Winthrop’s overall NCAA tournament record stands at 1-11, Frost emphasizes a deeper understanding of college athletics. He sheds light on the significance of the experiences beyond the wins and losses, prioritizing the student-athletes. His dedication rested on reporting their achievements and documenting their athletic journeys throughout his time at the university.

Enduring Friendships and Lasting Impact

Colleagues remember Frost for his selflessness and tireless advocacy for Winthrop and its athletes. His commitment has left a lasting impact on the university community. His successor, Chuck Rey, the current athletics director, speaks fondly of Frost’s devotion to student-athletes and the immense pride he took in his work. Mark Simpson, a senior associate commissioner of the Big South, also highlighted Frost’s unique work ethic, which continues to inspire those in the field.

A New Chapter: Life After Retirement

After hanging up his proverbial boots in 2017, Frost didn’t retreat from the sports scene. He found a new calling as the sports information coordinator at Legion Collegiate Academy, a charter school located in Rock Hill. His passion for sports and commitment to student development remains unwavering.

Looking Ahead to the Induction Ceremony

The much-anticipated Hall of Fame ceremony is scheduled for January 12, 2024, at 6 p.m. This exciting event will take place in the beautiful Richardson Ballroom of the DiGiorgio Campus Center at Winthrop University. Alongside Frost, other remarkable figures will also be honored, including Marthaline Cooper from track and field, Jacob Dempsey of baseball, Krystyna Freda from women’s soccer, Henry Kalungi from men’s soccer, Erin Lehman from volleyball, and Daniel Revivo also from men’s soccer.

With such a rich legacy at Winthrop University, Jack Frost’s induction into the Hall of Fame is not just a personal achievement but a celebration of the steadfast spirit of athletics that continues to thrive within the institution.
