York County Faces Thunderstorm Alerts and Tornado Report

Dramatic skies and storm clouds over York County during a severe thunderstorm.

News Summary

Residents of York County were warned of severe thunderstorms and a brief tornado event. Thunderstorm warnings were issued, predicting gusty winds and localized flooding. A tornado confirmed earlier caused damage but no injuries. Authorities urge residents to stay prepared.

York County Faces Thunderstorm Alerts and Tornado Report

On a typical day in York County, residents found themselves bracing for a surge of extreme weather. On Sunday evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a strong thunderstorm warning at precisely 7:10 p.m. This alert remained in effect until about 7:45 p.m., affecting areas across York County.

What to Expect with the Thunderstorms

The thunderstorms brought with them wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph, creating quite a ruckus in the air. The Doppler radar picked up a significant storm right five miles southwest of Gastonia, near the picturesque Crowders Mountain State Park, making its way eastward at a leisurely pace of 10 mph. Residents in locations including Gastonia, Kings Mountain, Bessemer City, and others were alerted to prepare for strong winds that could knock down tree limbs and send unsecured objects flying.

If you happened to be outdoors during this storm, the NWS advised seeking shelter. Torrential rains accompanied these storms, leading to possible localized flooding. A big no-no to remember: don’t attempt to drive through flooded roadways!

Some Important Lightning Facts

Speaking of storms, did you know that last year, our nation experienced around 25 million lightning strikes? The majority of these happen during the summer months, with an average of about 20 fatalities connected to strikes each year. As thunderstorms roll in, the chances of lightning striking increase, especially when the storm is right above your head. If you’re driving, be cautious to avoid hydroplaning, which can happen when water builds up in front of your tires faster than your vehicle can displace it, leading to a loss of traction.

Brief Tornado Makes an Appearance

York County just a couple of days earlier. On Friday, video evidence sent in by local folks helped the NWS pinpoint the tornado’s occurrence around 6:33 p.m. The tornado was located along Percival Road, near the Brattonsville and McConnells areas.

This lucky tornado had maximum winds recorded at an impressive 80 mph, leaving a damage path of approximately a quarter of a mile long and 25 yards wide. Thankfully, reports indicated no injuries stemming from this rough weather event. But there was some damage – locals reported issues with a barn, a playset, and a few trees that had seen better days due to this brief tornado.
