The Winthrop University Eagles volleyball team secured a 3-2 victory over Old Dominion University on Saturday afternoon, September 5, at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill. Winthrop took the first two sets before the Monarchs rallied, but the Eagles finished the comeback fight with a 15-13 win in the deciding fifth set.
Winthrop controlled the opening sets, winning 25-16 and 25-12. Old Dominion answered with 25-17 and 25-23 wins to force a fifth set. The Eagles fell behind 5-1 early in the decider, then rallied to tie the set at 5-5 on back-to-back aces from Lindsay Langner. Maggie Czajka later delivered three aces during a 5-0 Winthrop run that put the Eagles ahead 11-8.
Winthrop's key contributors included Paige Bennett, whose attacking helped the Eagles stay in control, and setter Lexi Thatcher, who connected with Bennett during the fourth-set rally. Langner supplied the pivotal service run, while Czajka's three aces turned the fifth set in Winthrop's favor. Those named Eagles leaders helped Winthrop withstand Old Dominion's late push and close out the match.
The match featured nine ties and four lead changes, with four of the ties coming in the fifth set. Winthrop held on for the 15-13 deciding-set victory and finished the day with a 3-2 win at its home invitational.
