The Winthrop University Eagles volleyball team experienced a 3-0 loss to Wofford in straight sets on Saturday at John M. Belk Arena in Davidson, North Carolina. This match saw the Eagles unable to secure a set against their opponent.
Paige Bennett led the Rock Hill team with 13 kills during the match. Cami Roberts contributed significantly with 32 assists, while Maggie Czajka achieved a .778 hitting percentage, recording seven kills for the Eagles. Other notable individual performances included Teagan Sychterz with nine kills and Addison Torrain with 14 digs. Reece Rhoads and Addison Torrain each served two aces, with Bennett and Sychterz adding one ace apiece. Czajka, Sychterz, and Laila Glover each recorded one block.
In the first set, Wofford gained an early advantage with an ace. Although Bennett, assisted by Roberts and Sychterz, briefly gave Winthrop a 2-1 lead with consecutive kills, Wofford responded with a 6-0 run. Bennett and Rhoads narrowed the gap to 23-21, but Wofford ultimately secured the set 25-22.
The Eagles started the second set with a kill from Sychterz, assisted by Roberts, and Bennett’s service ace extended their lead to 14-10. However, Wofford capitalized on errors to win the set 25-20. The third set saw Wofford take an early 7-2 lead, aided by Winthrop’s attack errors. Despite kills from Glover and Czajka, Wofford maintained control, closing the set 25-14.
The Winthrop Eagles are scheduled to return home to Rock Hill for their next match, facing Virginia Tech on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum.
