ROCK HILL, S.C. — Novant Health has released an early look at a 70-bed hospital it wants to build in Rock Hill on land the Carolina Panthers once planned to use for a practice facility.
The drawings include an emergency room and a helipad, along with space for professional and medical offices. The campus would cover more than 30 acres of the city-owned research park tract.
Rock Hill City Council cleared a key step Monday night, moving the property out of its industrial zoning and into a master-planned commercial district so a medical campus can go there.
The site grew this fall. On Sept. 28, council took its first vote on tacking about 10 more acres onto the Palmetto Parkway sale, for roughly 35 acres in all, sold at the per-acre rate set earlier.
That earlier deal dates to June 8, when council voted unanimously to approve the purchase agreement for the Palmetto Research Park land. At the time, the project was pegged as a $300 million medical campus expected to create 255 jobs.
The research park sits at Palmetto Parkway and Mt. Gallant Road beside Interstate 77, served by exit 81. Novant, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., runs 19 medical centers across the two Carolinas.
Novant has not announced a construction timeline for the Rock Hill hospital.
