ROCK HILL, S.C. — One goal in the final eight minutes was all Winthrop needed Saturday in Rock Hill, as the Eagles women’s soccer team beat Gardner-Webb 1-0 in a Big South match at Eagle Field.
Junior midfielder Cordelia McIntosh broke the scoreless tie at 82:50, finishing a ball from senior Monssi Avila-Gutierrez. McIntosh put seven shots toward goal on the afternoon, three of them on frame, and it was her second goal of the season.
Winthrop held the edge in play for much of the match, outshooting the Runnin’ Bulldogs 17-13 and earning seven corner kicks to two. Gardner-Webb keeper Abril Montiel kept the visitors in it with seven saves, and forward Julia McBride led her side with five shots, two of them on target.
Freshman Mia Ruffalo went the full 90 minutes in the Winthrop net, making three saves for her fifth clean sheet this season. Gardner-Webb fired five more shots after falling behind but could not find an equalizer.
Winthrop now sits at 5-9-1, with a 2-4-0 Big South mark, while Gardner-Webb drops to 5-8-2 and 2-3-1. The Eagles are off until Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they visit UNC Asheville at 6 p.m. Gardner-Webb hosts USC Upstate that same night.
