BISHOPVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Corrections has suspended the warden of Lee Correctional Institution without pay following his arrest on a driving under the influence charge, the agency said Monday.
Warden Shane Jackson was arrested Thursday, Oct. 29, in Sumter County, according to the department. Agency spokeswoman Chrysti Shain said he was taken off the job without pay as soon as the department learned of the arrest. Court records show he posted a $1,017 bond the next day.
The department has not released details about the traffic stop or the arrest.
Stephen Duncan, a regional director for the agency, is running the Bishopville prison while the suspension and investigation continue. Before this assignment, Duncan led Broad River Correctional Institution as its warden.
Lee is one of 21 institutions in the state prison system, which sorts its prisons by custody level. The highest-security sites hold mainly violent offenders serving long sentences and inmates with behavior problems, with double-fenced perimeters and heavy electronic monitoring.
