Rock Hill Area Schools Excel on State Tests

Published August 19, 2026 at 11:29 am | By Hannah Ford, Staff Reporter

Recently released statewide test scores indicate that several public schools in the Rock Hill region are among South Carolina’s top performers. An analysis of English, math, science, and history scores from over 1,200 elementary, middle, and high schools revealed a broad spectrum of achievement across the region, with top scores not exclusively originating from Fort Mill.

Elementary schools across the state tested third through fifth-grade students in English and math, with fourth-grade students also tested in science. Out of more than 650 elementary schools, a ranking within the top 100 places a school in the top 15% statewide. The Rock Hill region had 17 elementary schools with an average state ranking across all subjects within the top 100. Kings Town, River Trail, Indian Land, Harrisburg, Tega Cay, and Gold Hill all achieved rankings within the top 50. The Fort Mill School District, which has been a top district statewide in most testing categories for several years, saw 10 of its 12 elementary schools average scores within the top 100. The Lancaster County School District contributed four schools to this list, and the Clover School District added three.

For middle schools, which typically serve grades six through eight and test students in English, math, and eighth-grade science, a top 50 ranking is needed to be in the top 15% statewide among over 350 institutions. All six Fort Mill district middle schools achieved all-subject average rankings of 37 or better, with Gold Hill Middle averaging 12.4, Pleasant Knoll 16.9, and Forest Creek 18.1. Outside of Fort Mill, Indian Land Intermediate, Oakridge Middle, Indian Land Middle, and York Preparatory Academy performed best among area schools.

High school tests covered Algebra 1, Biology 1, English 2, and U.S. History and the Constitution. With 250 high schools tested statewide, a top 40 ranking signifies placement in the top 15%. Five area high schools from three districts met this benchmark. Of the 18 area public high schools, 11 averaged scores in the top 100 statewide. Fort Mill led the region with an average state ranking of 9, followed by Catawba Ridge at 13.7, Indian Land at 19.3, Nation Ford at 21, Clover at 36.7, and Legion Collegiate at 45.3.

District officials emphasize that test scores are one of several measures of school quality, and improvement is also a key factor. York Prep, for example, noted a six-year high in English and math for its middle school students. Lancaster County Superintendent Norris Williams stated that the latest results are a defining moment for the district, showing progress toward the performance levels of Fort Mill and Clover districts. Fort Mill Superintendent Grey Young acknowledged the strong performance of his students while stressing a continued focus on improvement.
