Rock Hill, South Carolina – Glenn McCall, the chairman of the Winthrop University Board of Trustees, passed away at the age of 71 on July 11, 2025, due to complications from surgery. His death marks a significant loss for both the university and the Republican Party in South Carolina.

McCall had a distinguished career, having served as the state GOP’s national committeeman since 2008, during which he chaired the budget committee of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and co-chaired the 2020 Republican National Convention Committee. He made history as the first Black national committeeman for the South Carolina Republican Party and previously held the position of York County GOP Chairman.

His contributions to Winthrop University began in 2011 when he was appointed to the board by the state education superintendent. In 2014, he was named to an at-large seat by the state legislature and was re-elected for a term extending until 2027. In June 2025, he was elected for his second two-year term as chairman.

Following McCall’s passing, Joel Hamilton, a Winthrop alumnus and former York County Councilman, has been appointed to succeed him as chairman of the board of trustees. Hamilton, who was elected vice chairman just last month, will complete the remainder of McCall’s term as chairman.

In addition to his political and educational roles, McCall also had a notable military career, serving in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years. He retired as a senior vice president of Bank of America and possessed a bachelor’s degree in management information systems and a master’s in business administration from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Winthrop University, located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, serves nearly 5,000 students and offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Originally founded in 1886 as a training school for teachers, the institution transitioned from a college to a university in 1992. The leadership of Winthrop is expressing deep appreciation for McCall’s contributions and the impact of his leadership.

Winthrop President Edward Serna highlighted McCall’s significant role in shaping the board’s direction and noted Hamilton’s potential for continuing McCall’s legacy. Friends and colleagues have described McCall as a kind, loyal, and influential figure, emphasizing his dedication to the Republican Party and his moral clarity.

State GOP Chairman Drew McKissick remarked that McCall would be “sorely missed,” citing his substantial contributions to maintaining South Carolina’s position in presidential primaries. Throughout his life, McCall was actively involved in his local church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher.

He is survived by his wife Linda, their three children, and one grandchild, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to both his community and his country.
