Rock Hill, SC – Winthrop University has appointed alumnus Joel Hamilton as the new chairman of its Board of Trustees following the death of long-serving member Glenn McCall. McCall passed away at the age of 71 due to complications related to surgery, according to reports. Hamilton, who was elected as vice chairman of the board in June, will now fill the remainder of McCall’s two-year term as chairman.
Glenn McCall was a prominent figure in South Carolina politics, having chaired the budget committee for the Republican National Committee and co-chaired the 2020 Republican National Convention Committee. He made a significant impact on the Winthrop Board, serving since his appointment by the state education superintendent in 2011. He was later appointed to an at-large seat by the state legislature in 2014, with an additional re-election that ensures his term runs through 2027. Just last month, he was elected to his second two-year term as board chairman.
Joel Hamilton has acknowledged the influence that McCall had on him, stating that he feels fortunate to have learned from McCall during their time together on the board. Hamilton’s relationship with the university goes back to his graduation in 2006, following which he served on the York County Council as a Republican, having been elected in 2018. He opted not to run for re-election in 2022.
In addition to his council duties, Hamilton was involved in various business and civic organizations, and notably led York County’s economic development committee while serving on the council. Two years ago, Hamilton was designated for a seat on the Winthrop Board by State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver.
The Winthrop Board of Trustees serves as the governing body for Winthrop University, which currently enrolls nearly 5,000 students. Founded in 1886 as a training school for teachers, the institution has been located in Rock Hill since 1895. The university expanded its admissions policy to include undergraduate men in 1974 and transitioned from a college to a university in 1992. It currently offers more than 150 academic programs, including bachelor’s, master’s, and minor degrees, with a reputation for its education program.
The board is expected to convene later this month to elect a new vice chair. Winthrop University President Edward Serna has expressed his belief in Hamilton’s capability to lead the board effectively during this transitional period, especially following the unexpected passing of McCall.
