ROCK HILL, S.C. — A busy Lake Wylie-area intersection is coming down for a rebuild.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation will close Kingsbury Road at SC 557 in York County beginning Monday, July 27. The intersection closure is expected to last about 15 days, weather permitting, according to the agency’s July 20 announcement.
During the closure, crews will realign Kingsbury Road so it can eventually tie into Ridge Road. When finished, the reconfigured intersection will operate under a traffic signal — a change SCDOT says is aimed at improving safety at what has become one of the busier Lake Wylie-area crossings.
Drivers coming through the area will use a 1.3-mile detour that runs along SC 557, Paraham Road and SC 55. A section of Kingsbury Road immediately south of the intersection will be closed for the full 15-day window.
What Rock Hill and Lake Wylie drivers need to know
For Rock Hill commuters and Lake Wylie residents, the closure sits in the middle of a corridor that has grown steadily as northern York County has absorbed new subdivisions, retail and school traffic. The SC 557 alignment carries traffic between Rock Hill’s western fringe and the North Carolina line — meaning the detour will affect not just local trips but also cross-state drivers.
SCDOT has not yet said whether the July 27 closure will be marked with advance electronic signage on nearby routes. Drivers who use Kingsbury Road as a shortcut to reach Ridge Road, US 21 or the SC 49 corridor should expect the detour to add several minutes during peak hours.
Part of a broader York County corridor project
The Kingsbury/SC 557 work is one piece of a larger intersection-improvement effort in York County. SCDOT has been staging realignment and signalization projects across the region as northern York County’s population growth reshapes traffic patterns. Winthrop University sits at the center of Rock Hill’s downtown, and Piedmont Medical Center anchors the eastern side of the city, but the fastest-growing traffic loads sit in the Lake Wylie and Fort Mill areas — where this closure lands.
The full intersection project is expected to be complete after the 15-day realignment window closes and the permanent signal is installed. SCDOT has not published a firm date for the signal activation.
