ROCK HILL, S.C. — Atlas Copco cut the ribbon Wednesday, Oct. 28, on a new 200,000-square-foot plant on Celriver Road in Rock Hill, a site the Swedish manufacturer expects to staff with about 100 new hires.
Called The Next USA, the building is the fifth Rock Hill location the company has opened in roughly 30 years. Philippe Ernens, president of the company’s Compressor Technique business, gave the hiring figure at the ceremony.
Four businesses share the new space: Atlas Copco Compressors, Edmac, BeaconMedaes and OriginAir. The plant was purpose-built to assemble oil-free air compressors and includes a dedicated testing bay. It will also handle remanufactured equipment, aftermarket compressor parts and medical air and gas systems for hospitals and labs, and the company says more product lines are expected to move there later.
Mayor John Gettys traced the company’s local roots to 1997 and credited an earlier expansion into the Lowenstein Building, a former textile mill near downtown, with helping draw workers back to the city center.
Atlas Copco employs about 1,000 people across the Carolinas. Its Power Technique operation on Paragon Way has more than 400 workers, ranking it among the top five manufacturers in York County.
