ROCK HILL, S.C. — President Donald Trump brought his closing midterm pitch to Rock Hill on Thursday night, asking a packed arena crowd to treat Tuesday’s election as though his own name were on the ticket.
The visit was the president’s second to the state in a little over a week. Its main target was the U.S. Senate seat, where Sen. Darline Graham, appointed after the death of her brother, faces Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews in a contest polls show tightening.
Graham used her time on stage to cast herself as a reliable Trump ally on border security, gun rights and judicial confirmations, while Trump went after Andrews on transgender issues. Alan Wilson, the party’s nominee for governor, also shared the stage.
Some fans were waiting outside by 5:30 a.m. that day, and thousands came from several states, a reflection of the city’s spot near the North Carolina line. Trump, speaking with a tired voice, said he would keep up a national tour through the final days.
Andrews answered in a statement that the senator should press the president on lowering gas, diesel and household costs rather than on winning an election. The South Carolina Democratic Party said two rallies in eight days would not change the record of decades of Republican control. Polls open Tuesday, Nov. 3.
